Hmmm. I hope that this is not a repaint because I have just had my paint guy mix me up a batch to match it!

And to add another bit of anal-ness: Is the fact that the decal is placed closer to the top of the side panel (rather than towards the middle as in the brochure ) confirmation of the the fact that it it is a re-paint?

Too high on the sidecover. And not parallel to the Z plate - you have answered your own question.

Its not entirely apparent what color that sidecover is either ?
The 71 color selector page from your Dealer would place it somewhere about tangerine, not red enough to be signal red ??

Noted. And, incidentally, thanks for that model range colour chart. The bike was painted signal orange when it left the factory in July 1971, and it is a match for that colour that I have been searching for over the last seven years.

The photo above does not show the exact colour (flash photography etc); it is actuallly much darker and 'richer' in colour and more similar to the sample in the colour range chart.

Whoever did the re-paint did it a very long time ago. The decal has 'crazed' over time and looks similar to ones on bikes from the '70s.

All fun and games.

we want to be original but of course but that goes out the window when we want to put the decal under the clear coat?

Didn't the decals sit on top of the clear coat originally? I see so many like that and damn only time and it doesn't matter how straight the decal is it will look like crap!

... if in fact they used clear coat in those days! In the overall scheme of things, does it really matter? Unless someone is trying to make a museum quality machine it really all boils down to the owner's personal taste..... bobber seat anyone? Chopped frame? Flame paint job? Decals not horizontal?

And with all of the interesting titbits of information we are hearing about what went on at the factory at the time, who can guarantee a 'museum quality' build anyway.
