Commando Roadster Mk3 battery side panel lost

I don’t have the dzus fastener on mine any more. I have two pins at the rear, then mount the front bracket on an M6 silent block bush (bobbin).

Due to the angle of the pins, they push it forward onto the bush, and with the thread length on the bush, it doesn’t really even need a nut. But I use a wing nut for ‘belt n braces’ and so it can still be removed without tools if needed.

BTW the side panel is fibre glass and the bracket came from RGM.

(Before anyone asks, the two holes are so I can move it inboard for the high level 2:1 pipe)

I have that on Matt's side cover - a real PIA for the interstate (4" longer tank) which means you have to remove the tank to get the LH side cover off. Bastard!!
Cheers

I use the Dzus with one of those Velcro straps for electrical or computer cords wrapped around the bracket and frame. Caught it loose at the Dzus a couple of times but haven’t lost a side panel yet.

Al - a question.
My Dzu, when turned, has some resistance before "springing" into the locked position.
My thoughts arer that this is fairly secure system. The "spring" is caused by the position of the wire that the dzu locks onto.
Did your side cover dzu have that spring/lock feel prior to your regrettable loss?
Maybe my period of blissful ignorance is over.
Cheers
Rob,
The Mk IIA and Mk IIIs don't use steel Dzus fasteners like on the earlier Commandos. See the link in kommando's post #9. These are made of Nylon and no spring.

My side cover had no Dzus front bracket , it had been removed, it was secured by a bolt through the top to attach it to bracket in pic. If you look at the panel in the bike pic you can just see the bolt at top of panel under the seat.

The Mk IIA and Mk III use a plastic air filter box. This box has a steel bracket riveted to it's left side. This is what the left side cover gets secured to, via the "Dart" style Dzus fastener. See items #21 & #19 in the link below

However, only the Mk3 airbox has the riveted bracket and Dzus fastener.

The Mk1A/Mk2A airbox has a bolted-on bracket with a locating pin for the panel and is also the ignition switch bracket.
The (different) Mk1A/2A Dzus receptacle clips into a bracket on the battery tray.

For years I rode with an interstate tank on my mk2 wir roadster panels. No rear tank strap means just lift it a bit to get the panel off. :-D

This looks pretty much like the type I've had fitted to my Mk3 for years. D4-AJW4-40.

I like that idea, I may modify my bike the same way. I came close to losing the LH cover from my bike last summer, it had come off the rear 'pins' and was hanging on by the Dzus fastener. I do have a tool roll in the compartment, and that is quite heavy, so probably an idea to re-think that.
On my Mk1 850 I also thought I might have overloaded the side panel tool compartment so bought a (slightly flimsy) mk3 tool tray which fits under the seat. I only use the side panel location now for light stuff like zip ties, rags, tape etc. I had to relocate some electrical components but I have a non standard layout so can't comment on a std one?
Will definitely reconsider the std metal dzus fastener in the light of this thread as I have lost too many side panels on Guzzis and triumphs over the years
