Cold Start Issues ... Just Thinking

Why are they charging for the remap of a new bike that clearly doesn't run right with it's as supplied factory map?

Doesn't seem right to me.

This is the question I am currently putting to MCC starting with the sales guy. $120 plus shipping is what I was quoted.

Tony, I could go to Gold Coast. But I figured it would more appropriate for MCC to do it.

So I need to figure out which ECU I have. I'm almost certain I have map code #77, but I can't find my Dyno print-out that tells me the map code and date.

The reason I ask is that I just had the Triumph remapped, no charge and the problem fixed was pretty minor in comparison with yours.
The bike would some times idle at a slightly higher rpm than normal, about 50 rpm. You could hear it pick up then drop down, no problem but the new map fixed it so the idle is steady like a metronome.
Also some riders( my God they are a picky buncj!) complained that they felt the fueling was uneven when riding very slowly, say thru town at 20 MPH. I can't say I noticed this as it was smoother than my carburetted bikes already, especially if I switched it to Road mode instead of Sport.
Anyway, the new tune perfected the idle and did make things smoother at the low end somehow. Seems to be a bit more grunt down low as well.

So it would seem if a cheapie machine like the Triumph gets reflashed for free to fix tiny imperfections in running, Norton shouldn't be charging to fix fairly severe fueling issues in their considerably more expensive machine.

I totally agree, Glen. I think the problem is that MCC knows they will not be reimbursed for the labor. A sticky situation for them knowing how much i spent on this bike and having to charge me for a re-map. In the end I will probably pay for it just to clear the issues up. It's bad enough to not feel like taking her out for a quick spin after work because I know how much effort that start up takes. And then there's the misfires when the dip below 4K for too long. I'm not so inspired to ride unless I know I will travel more than 30 miles on an open road.

I still wonder how different my rides would be if I had forfeited the deposit on the Norton and gone for the Triumph. The nagging question is would I be able to live with that EFI housing or not. My guess is that they will re-think that design in some future model. That's when I will become REALLY jealous!

I had map 77. Harder cold starts, vibes at 4700, engine raced to 2400 rpm when hot. Got #91, bike is perfect. Went in for repair, reinstalled #77 (unknowingly). All the crappy symptoms came back. Took the bike back, reinstalled #91, bike runs like a Swiss watch. I think Gold Coast only charged me 60something.(1/2 hr.) but I did buy the bike from them. Of course did not charge me the second time. Also, Matt at South Bay told me the wires keep the bike from starting and warming up properly. Haven't gotten to them yet because I've been very happy lately. Keep in mind, I have the SBN decatted pipes. What are you running?

Interesting. I have the Motad pipes with the de-cat X-pipe. #91 ought to work great on mine, too. I just wish MCC had installed it while they had it. :x I will check out Gold Coast for price, but I think it will be high because they won't have my bike.

Thanks for the info!

Update: I still can't find my Dyno print out, but I was able to dig up the e-mail message from MCC that states they installed (or left installed) map code #77 during the first week of February. On the upside, I've been in touch with Simon and maybe I can get a solution moving forward. :)

In the meantime I am checking out a 2006 Speed Triple while vacationing with my brother in Colorado. I may just purchase it before the week is out and make her my back up bike. It's always good to have a second bike to ride while the first is down for maintenance ... my season winds down by late October around here.
