If the goal is to reduce the friction and pull of the clutch, I think that an o-ring would be less desirable than the seal. Of course we are, as they say, probably splitting hairs.

Jean, you should probably ask comnoz how to market your parts through someone like CNW.

I would be honoured to have my desing copied by Jim for CNW :D I have utmost respect for both of them.

How do you adjust or set up the clutch?

It will be a screw like the original, but the adjusting screw will be made differently to work with my setup. I will post pictures as soon as I have finished it.

Thanks Jean when I get around to that project I will post what I end up with. Have you got a no. for the thrust bearing?

It is a Timken NTA-916, when I ordered it, I just asked for one needle bearing about "ye" big and machined the parts I needed around it.

Aren't you working at the wrong end to get a lighter clutch pull? a better cam profile over the ball is more likely to give a smoother pull, still good to see nice work though.

He may have not shown us what he has planned for the either end yet.

Well, whittle a little bit of metal, post a few pictures and people think you are the son of DaVinci, I'm just a wrench monkee with a bit of free time, speaking of which, I had some free time today and I think this should work out pretty well...

The parts:

The look of the steel parts are my attempt at hardening (so far), still a bit of cleaning up to do.

Assembled:

Mounted on the clutch hub:

I still have to machine the top plate to get the stack height correct, only about 0.025" to remove. I also have to drill the holes for the safety wire.

Adjustment will be the same as the stock unit. I haven't done anything to the cam end except use an Atlas cam which is "supposed" to have a better profile, but from what I have seen so far, a featherlight pull can be acheived by working on the clutch side.

Jean

PS A real genius is Jim Comstock and we are lucky to have him with us on this forum and what is more important working on getting Nortons to work better.

You are going to need a Plexiglas primary case to show it off.

He's running a dry clutch so he can just cut a nice hole over the clutch for all to see.

Sad to say all this is hidden from view by the pressure plate :( but everyone who has seen my pictures will know :D

Hi Jeandr, Got around to playing with the clutch seal today.

Did not go all the way with the thrust bearing setup that you designed as I only wanted to stop the gearbox oil ingress to the clutch plates and I agree with you that a seal is the way to go over the "O" ring. Sorry about the quality of the photos but my Nikon died and I used the wifes Fuji, not as good as the Nikon or operator error.

Glad to have been an inspiration, nice job and I am jealous of your milling machine.

Jean

Jean you did get motivated and with the work you do you should get a mill it makes life easy, mine is Sun which is a Taiwan copy of a Bridgeport. You can, as you must do most work in your lathe but it is so much easyer with the mill.
Davidsum1 I only made this one of. I only make stuff for myself or any mates who come around and know what I have in my play room. When I retire and I have more time I may work on the side but I run out of time with all the toys, bikes X 6, boat, 4x4+camper and worst of all work. On the seal set up I would have to pay royaltys to Jean as it was his idea. I am sure there will be one of the guys like CNW or the like that are in business that will produce Jeans idea if there is enough demand.

Ian

I'm jealous as I have no machine shop capability.
You all are amazing at what you can make on a lathe.
I retire in 7 years anybody want an old aprrentice?
