Clutch locating circlip question MKIII

Hi All,
I have a question regarding installing the little clutch circlip that the clutch butts up against:
How do you get it down the gearbox shaft and towards the groove without excessively spreading it?
I am using the alternate clip that you sand down a bit...

With a circlip plier. Even without holes to grab, start it on the shaft, spread GENTLY with external ring pliers.
