Clear Coat over a polished Aluminum Tank

A guy with an R1200RS BMW had an engine self destruct because it ran out of oil...WHICH he never checked. He said he expected the bike (his first) to not need any oil between changes even though the owners manual states to check it at every gas fillup.

BMW replaced the engine at no charge but IMO, they shouldn't have... ;)
 
My 73 850 has pitting over most of the primary case and the more that I buff and polish the more I see . A pourus (piss pour) casting. Looks OK from 10ft, oh well.

That’s why Matt at cNw sells billet ones mate… perfect finish…

My personal answer to the problem is Scotchbrite (tho it’s not everyone cuppa tea) !

I had similar issue. Ended up plating it. They smoothed it out as best they could then plated with copper to fill the residual porous surface, then chrome.
I can say this approach really solved the problem and can also say it was not an inexpensive process. I wanted to retain the original cover and a new one was appx. the same cost as the repair.
 
I was told about mothers mag polish years ago.I have an alloy tank with transfers I use it on.It covers the transfers without any problems and seals the aluminum.Great product.Send me an email off line and I will send some pics.I can't seem to get them onto this site.
