As small as you can get it without touching on both sides. You may find that it does hurt to adjust! This is definitely a case of don't fix what's not brokenI took cover off my gearbox as the shifter seal was leaking. Before I reassemble, I thought to adjust the ratchet plate to gearshift pawl gap.
I have no shift problems but it never hurts to adjust

The new Andover spring is thinner yet stronger . If it shifts fine between gears then good .Mine is at 20 thou now
Just in case I mis-conveyed this, I am not asking for the gap measurement between the spring and the pawl, but the measurement between the pawl and the ratchet plate. Thanks
