Cam chain tension

Hi all, When measuring cam chain free play on mk3 is it just a case of measuring play through the inspection cap without doing anything else or is there more to it Brian

Yes, that's all there is to it unless of course you feel that it needs adjusting...............then it's off with the timing cover.

In my experience, probably due to the relatively low milage most of us do these days, adjustment is not normally required.

Turn the engine over slowly using the kickstart or via the backwheel in 4th, aim to get the max slack in the top run where the inspection cap is. The valve spring pressure means the slack can be in the top or bottom run depending on where the engine is in its cycle, plus you can have uneven wear.
