It seems there's some mixed reviews scattered about on the BT H mag with an electronic advance, so while thinking of my options for a battery-less ignition, I thought I might try to collect other's thoughts on this.

I've had good luck with Hunt and Lucas mags with an AAU, but an electronic curve sounds so alluring, instead of opening up the timing cover to fuss with the bob weights.

Anybody have experience/thoughts?

A Norstar that I modify & maintain for a good mate of mine has a BTH electronic mag. fitted. After doing some work on the engine I re fitted & timed it. It's so simple a child could do it. As for running, it starts easily & runs very well indeed.
When I was building my Big Head Bullet I considered fitting one after my Interspan failed to come back from a £250 rebuild, GRRR!, but the price put me off. Intead I fitted a Electrex World crank driven job, & even though I've read lots of negitive reports about them it works perfectly. The Motocross lads certainly seem to like them.

I run my Joe Hunt maggie without a AAU on my Norton for near 10 years now and have never had any problems, starts on one kick every time, first kick for the day is one big swing on the kicker after that for the rest of the day only needs 1/2 swing on the kicker to fire up, it idles great, will run great at low, mid to full revs, even ran a JH on my old Triumph without a AAU and same thing started first kick every time and was such a reliable maggie but it was the 2 rare earth magnets the Norton JH has 4 rare earth magnets and a stronger spark.
I don't know why so many make a big deal about retarding a JH or any other maggie for that matter to start as they fire up and run great without a AAU installed, well this is my opinion and I have run 2 JH maggies 10 years now on my Norton and 9 years on my old Triumph that clocked up a lot of road miles without any AAU installed.

The price of them is dear, more than a new Hunt, or a rebuilt Hunt or Lucas, but if I get to skip pulling the timing cover and resetting the gap every time I have a new terrible tuning idea, that sounds maybe worth the extra money. One less variable to worry about, in theory, but the external coil(s) adds a variable compared to a "normal" magneto ignition, so maybe just a trade of things to worry about.

I like to think that my skills are somewhere above an underachieving child, but sometimes I'm not so sure. I've met some loathfully smart children.
