Just read it in Normans new book so it must be true!
Regarding the engine for the bike which was to become the Commando,
on page 62 he says: A variety of ideas were mooted at Woolwich (Plumstead actually) the most advanced of which was the 800cc P10 ohc twin. Nevertheless it was Edward Turners 360 degree twin cylinder design in enlarged form that was to become the future power source.
Poor old Bert must be Turnering in his grave. :)

I’m not following this string. The P10 had several problems and was not used for the new “Commando”. Reference to Edward Turner is only a standard 360 degree parallel twin which is the universal British engine. The Commando engine was from the Atlas not a Triumph engine.....so what’s the reference to Norton built a Triton?

You don’t see the attempt at humour? ET designed Triumph engines... so an ET engine in a Norton is a Triton...?

Anyway, moving on, the actual text in the book is strange, I assume it’s bad editing. First, it would surely have been more obvious to say it used the old BH designed engine, as that’s what it was. Second, it actually says “it was Edward Turners twenty year old 360 degree twin cylinder design”. Considering he’s talking about the events of 1966, this is clearly wrong. It is actually more likely to be when BH started the design of the Norton twin...

I thinks it's just the Turner thing....

OK.

Hey I see ‘62 ES2 in your signature........the red combat roadster is still in the garage, but my ‘61 ES2 just was not fast enough at least for where I lived at the time. Probably should have kept it though.

Yep - mine's not standard - really an overbored Model 50.
Good for 108mph - but just for a blast - not a daily rider proposition.
Fun though!

So what was it bored out to? Did you use the smaller valve Mod 50 head ?Mine had the inlet tract opened up ,head flowed (by me) and has mod 50 cam wheels . I am very impressed by 108mph... mine is good for 90-95 .
Contrary to expectation it goes much better with the smaller diameter mod50 exhaust
