Binding gearbox?

I have recently overhauled by 4 speed AMC gearbox. Its an ealrier 'N' model. The box has had many new parts including all bushes and bearings, both main/lay shafts, kickstart shaft and sleeve gear. Once built all four gears are selectable and all appears fine.

I have an issue whereby when I apply kicking pressure to the kickstart and hold at 9 o'clock, it appears to lock up the rear wheel and it can't be easily turned and if kicked through the full swing it drags the rear wheel around when on a paddock stand (i.e rear wheel off the floor).

If I kick the bike over with the rear wheel on the ground it appears to block the kickstart action and I don't get a full easy swing over of the motor.

Can anyone tell me if this is normal as I don't remember this being the case before rebuild. Do I have a problem, or am I imagining one? :)

Thanks,
Al

Doesn't sound normal to me! I have a Atlas that kicks thru if it is in Neutral!?!?

Yes it's weird. I've had the box stripped and rebuilt several times and all appears correct.

Someone more experienced then I will chime in, but it may be shimmed to tight , you are using gaskets? Or the shift cam and quadrant are out of position. Is it the original housing or has side plates been replaced, may be misaligned.

No shims in play. I have end float so no issue there. I am using standard gaskets. Shell, inner cover and outer cover are all original and 'N' series. I can get al four gears once built up.
