Battery Hold Down

Yeah, I've got that too. When the ophthalmologist put that on my record, I looked it up: "Old Man's Eyes".

They are not getting any better, but at least I only need glasses for the computer and reading, I can still pass the driving test.

I use two pieces of Velcro cable wrap, one in each direction around the battery, but then I've got the center mounted oil tank and the battery behind that.

A lot of folks over think this waaay too much. I have a supply of, and use all the time, hook-and-loop straps (Velcro) available from McMaster.

See here: http://www.mcmaster.com/#hook-and-loop-straps/=cdm8f8

Go with the heavy duty and the cinching ring. 1" wide will do the job in a Commando battery box. Measure the circumference of your battery/battery box for the appropriate length and you're good to go. The strap doubles back on itself and makes it easy to unstrap, for those who need access to their batteries a lot.

These are so strong we used a single 2" wide strap to cinch up a YTZ7S battery to a front frame tube crossmember on Doug McRae's Commando race bike at Mid Ohio last year, in an emergency switch from magneto to electronic ignition. Just wrapped around the battery and tube up front of the motor, hanging out there in the wind! Worked like a charm.

OK. Being Scotch, I like the fact that the carpet pad and the old sponge were layin around the garage and cost me nearly nothing. :D

Put together my own system today as I'd just bought a new battery and the previous one was held in place by occy straps. I've used tonneau retaining straps as used on utes or flatbeds or whatever you know them as. Couple of bucks at the local rubber disposals store, they look like this:

One on each side of the battery holder, bolted in place with M5 screws using existing holes and a short section of Aluminium extrusion with a screw at each end to stop the strap from slipping off:

And the battery? Motobatt sealed electrolyte battery. Suggested by the battery shop. Sure - why not. $75, though Reztes bought one of the same type and only paid $65 for it - pays to shop around.
I really liked the way the battery can be used in any orientation and how the terminals can be installed any side. Also like the brass and stainless components used in the terminals. Plus - no more spillage which has left a couple of small etches on the LHS pipe. There's a "booster seat" for installations requiring a taller battery - see the web site.
Quality? Dunno, time will tell I s'pose. Chinese after all. Price? Could be cheaper I think as the shop only has to stock one variant to cover a lot of installations. Colour? Yuck, but prof Swoosh might like it. Smile factor on a test ride on a freezing cold night with no hot grips? 10+.
