BAP Tap and bowl drain leaks.

Looked just at AN page and they are listed for about half of what the modern "correct" taps are selling for.
They are not on the German page you noted. For the price one sort of doubts that they are genuine. Ironically,
my clone BAPs are now leaking again after reversing the rubbers last year. How do you find the genuine
article?

Here is one Onder! I am now wondering if I should take another route. Under no circumstances do I want to do any dishonour to AN or NM, all I wish to do is to cure my problem, while the smell of petrol is driving me mad.

Sorry, I forgot to post my views! Initially I was impressed at the ease of movement but the finish of mating surface for the banjo did cause concern. Finally after the first ride fuel was creating along the threads.
All in all I must change my path of fitting then I think that I can reply back on a positive note.

Bin the silly dowty washers, and forget about teflon tape.

The Loctite #567 is DESIGNED to seal gasoline fittings.

Try it, you'll forget all about the old methods.

After having a constant dribble from carbs and non sealing taps I decided to order BAP taps and reseal the Mk 1 carbs. Once finished the (Premier) float bowls wouldn't seal at the drain and petrol was seeping up the thread from the banjo on the tap AND seeping from the joint where the dowty washer holds the tap in the tank.

So far I confronted the issue on the float bowls with using the old plastic screw plugs with the old thick green washers which had first been given a flat surface on some emery on a glass plate. To tighten them I use an old two shilling piece which seems to be made for the job.
Can these green gaskets be sourced still? In the Amal pack were only thin hard red ones supplied!

Now to the taps, my only theory to them is to use silikon tape to seal the threads but I wasn't enthralled by the look of the inverted conical joint where my banjo is bolted in to.
For now I have had enough inhaling of petrol, to the point I have a head full of it
and would dearly be glad to hear your input.

i've had good luck sealing threads in fuel fittings using GASOILA - top shelf stuff. for the float bowels, replaced the factory fittings with brass equivalents. leak free --

BTW, running BAP petcocks....

I have seen o rings put on the float bowl drains with success, there is a utube classic mechanic who swears by the mod

while we're on the subject of petcocks - most are rebuildable. i've found this is an excellent fuel resistant grease to lubricate those internals...

You are right there, the dowty's are binned and #567 is ordered but silikon tape and copper sealing washers like L.A.B. showed are keeping the house free of the smell of petrol up to now, let's see how it goes in the future.

Thank you all for the help!

Mine were real BAPs. No darn good after a couple years. Ended up springing for the fancy billet ones. These work.

There are different brands of the Stato seal . the USA ones I sell/use with Coventry Spares petcocks are aluminum with a nice rubber seal and USA made 70-7351, the other ones I have seen are steel with a rubber seal ,

You need the flat washer 83-0002 to go with them. and the proper type petcock and nut. And put the flat washer under the seal, so the nut does not cut into the rubber. The tank surface must be smooth with no chipped paint . Coventry petcocks look similar to OEM . Best petcocks I ever used.

The Andover Norton BAPs are sourced from the manufacturer, so unless BAP sell copies of their own taps (????) they are genuine. Price has probably something to do with direct supply and the quantities we order.

As for my own private Nortons I always use the BAPs when I replace original ones and have done for the last couple of decades. In fact i introduced them at Andover Norton, being unimpressed with the "genuine" type taps that are now from the Far East. And dare I say it they all work.

The only reason not to use a BAP can be spae problens, say on featherbed road models where the taps are hidden close to unaccessibility. Hence the "Unapproachable" slogan?

I use/install/sell the type in the picture. I get them and the sealing washers from Wassell and the backing washer from AN. To date, I've used/installed/sold a total of 276 of them with zero complaints. The only leaks I've seen are when the sealing area of the tank is not smooth - fix that and re-install and the leak is gone. I've never seen one leak as the valve part.

However, others I've bought similar to them from others have broken when tightened and/or have leaked.

AN has ones that look the same as well - whether they are from a good or bad manufacturer I cannot say, but my guess is that they are from a good one. They cost too much for me to test them.

Originally I had petcocks that looked identical to the one in Greg's pic, however, they sucked and obviously some kind of knock off. I bought a set from Greg and they are great, zero leaks and the improved lever operation is dramatic....

it's like everything else, if it works for you, that's all that matters.......

I hope that I have not caused any bad feelings!
The BAP's which I have, certainly are solid items, while being mounted using silikon tape on the threads and the flat surfaces with copper/rubber crush washers. Now all is fuel tight so much so after a 200 km ride all is still well (except for a drop of fuel on the head of the banjo bolt). A man's work is never done.
