My 1967 Atlas has a top bracket on the oil tank that is mounted to tank by 2 small bolts that come up through top of the tank...Bracket is mounted to these studs with washer and nut...I was wondering if this is correct mounting or should the bracket be welded...It almost looks like a retrofit of some kind...

My bracket ('63) was spot welded. Vibration broke welds clean thru tank and oil seeped out from under bracket. This is common with Atlas oil tanks. Best solution is to fabricate a new bracket from heavier gauge steel (12 ga.. I think, but maybe 14 is heavier than what Norton used), then weld all around new bracket. In my case, I first brazed all around bracket, but vibration broke again....then welding cannot be done over brazing.....had to cut out top of tank and weld a plate over, then do body work.

OTOH, if yours is not seeping oil, and you are comfortable with the retrofit, leave it alone.

Slick

BTW....if you fabricate a new bracket, be sure to include at least 1/8 radius at the 90 degree bend...vibration will fracture a tight bend.
