I have seen fine dust pile up inside of pleated paper aircleaners as well (Honda Accord).

1.6 million miles on TDI's, pleated paper MANN filters, always surgically clean downstream of the filter. A quarter million on other cars, 300K on bikes.
Never noticed any dust on any vehicle except a few that were assembled wrong, creating a leak.

Gauze doesn't filter that well. Foam is better, but can require some carburetor tuning effort.

Foam socks over K&N filters is the way to fly if you want to keep things clean. Makes for an ugly filter though.

I do have that dual ham box gauze filter in a box full of Norton bits and pieces, but it's an original K&N. Tight fit in the frame when I used it.

ok after reading the info on the MAP one ...
Features:

  • Replaces factory air box and offers less restricted airflow with great filtering.
  • Highest quality, long-lasting. MAP air filters are made from the finest Dupont air-filter material.
  • No foam or cheap surgical gauze is ever used.
  • Steel clamp included
i ordered it

I had a K&N on Amals. A wire fell out of it. The wire got caught between the piston and the cylinder wall and cut a gouge in the cylinder. I had to replace the cylinders because the gouge was deeper than an overbore.

Ouch! So much for the million mile warranty!
