Thanks for the further ideas. I have to admit, I have not compression tested the engine, lacking the equipment I guess (although I've just recently invested £40 in a decent timing light lol), maybe I should have a look at compression. I think I might be able to push my camera phone pretty close into the valve springs and take a piccie with it set to macro, but that may have to wait a few days, as Son and I had a slight "off" whilst out cycling last night(patch of gravel) so he's currently nursing a broken wrist, and Ive cracked two ribs and damaged my shoulder.

When you say you may hear spit and hiss in the intakes, and have poor compression, is that because with a tighter tolerance, the valve will be "unseated" for longer than it should?

further then, if I were to get a compression tester, would I expect to see lessening compression as I decrease the valve clearance?
 
I have a combat camshaft laying on the bench ready to install in my engine. Will get some time to take a photo of the "SS" stamp and post it as soon as I get some time off.
