An interesting read

Good spot - thanks for sharing ;)

Mine is currently wearing a pair of rock hard original 4.10 x19 Roadrunners - guaranteed to last the lifetime of the bike... if you see what I mean
Ironically they'd probably pass an MOT, but I don't think I'll bother.

I believe the 'new' K81s are a pretty soft compound, so I may start with those. I'll stick with 4.10 F&R because it'll feel more like my Duke...I'm not too worried about increased flickability at my age...eeeeh, when I were a Lad, etc.

Oh no, I'm in another dilema. Just took the front out & had the tyre taken off. Sending the hub to Mick Hemmings to have a 19" WM2 put on. Was going to put a 90 section tyre on, now I'm thinking maybe I should do the back rim as well & put K81's both. When I first had my bike in 1976 it had tt10's on it & it was a superb handling bike.

The article is a little behind the times. Avon no longer supplies AM18 tires having been replaced by AM26 Roadrider. On my '72 750 I have AM20 90/90x19 front and AM26 100/90x19 rear. Both are going to need replacing mid way through next season. I really don't like the faster stearing of the 90/90 size, but not sure if the AM26 100/90 will fit in my narrow chromed from fender. I may have to mount the tire from the rear on the front at the time I need to make the decision, just to see. The modern Avons have been great for handling, not sure I want to go back to a 4.10 Avon Universal or Dunlop K81.

I don't think you would be happy with the K81's as they have a VERY bad tendency to track ANY irregularity in the road. For that matter any tyre with a straight center groove will also do it.

windy

Called Tramlining, horrible.
Thinking about it, I shall try a 90 section.

I know the article is slightly out of date, but interesting.

Funny how we're all fiddling with Commandos and considering the article 'out of date'

I know what you mean though - I have Roadriders on my T140 and they're well grippy. Thinking about it I have them on my Ducati as well - the front does get pushed occasionally (totally the opposite to the T140, which has Western bars fitted), but it's always progressive, and squeals like mad but still grips if I overcook it.
