I have a 1975 Commando MKIII. I have spent a lot of time with my old Amals trying to get them to idle properly. Using Bushmans Carb Secrets I set my carbs up from top to bottom and still could not get a good idle. The bike ran great except for the idle issue I decided to have them re sleeved and replace everything with new components including Stayup floats. I contacted Jerry (Access Norton) about this idea. He suggested the new Amal Premeires. After much emailing and several phone conversations I ordered a new set for my bike. The price difference between a new set vs the cost of repair parts was so small it was worth a shot. It took a couple of hours to swap everything out and set up the cables and slides. The bike started right up, it took less that 10 minutes to set the air screw and idle stops. I have a couple of hundred mile on them now and have not had to touch them at all. The bike is a little cold blooded now and requires the choke to start, but once it is warmed up a little it runs and idles perfectly at 700 rpms. For anyone thinking about a complete rebuild vs new carb, or a different brand I would suggest talking to Jerry. He was extremely helpful and spent a lot of time with me making sure I got what I needed. This is without exception the best upgrade I have made on my bike.

Re: Amal Premeires

You need the choke you say. Where do you live? I usually find that if you flood it with the ticklers
it will always fire even in the cold weather.
Im in upstate NY

Re: Amal Premeires

I did the resleeve thing, but then I'd already changed most of the other parts in the carby, but I'm happy too. Now I can take my hand off the throttle without wondering what it's going to do.

Re: Amal Premeires

I've installed Amal premiers on my 73 850 - 260 mains, 106 needle, 3.5 slides, needle clip in bottom groove, K&N filter. In the rebuild I left the chokes off. I tickle the carbs ( quick count to 7, can almost do it with eyes closed ) and it kicks over first time. I let it sit at 1500 - 2000 rpms for a minute or two and it's good to go. Idles rock solid at 1,000 rpm. The only issue I had with them is that one came in with four phillips screws and the other had four pozidrive  But they are Amals after all….

Re: Amal Premeires

Had mine resleeved with the stay-ups but wish the Premiers were introduced at that time for sure. Don't forget to drain gas out before any long layup (winter ?) or use fuel stabilizer otherwise the pilot jets can gum up then you have some real idle issues. Enjoy. :)

Re: Amal Premeires

Onder,
Although I just posted this fix again I did the install in November. I did a re-post because i wanted to say how much of a help Jerry was in this process. I live in New Jersey. Once spring broke and with fresh fuel in the tank you are correct. Tickle the carbs and one or two kicks. I have at least a 1000 miles on them now and no problems.

Unfortunately, the Access Norton Amal 'shop' has closed since then (although it would appear carbs and parts are still available "to order") as Jerry simply couldn't spare the time to keep it going.

Re: Amal Premeires

Too bad Jerry stopped selling Amal/Amal parts he was interesting to guy to talk to, and really helpful. Guess he has more time to ride now. Thanks for the info L.A.B.
P.S. This is the bike that has those unmarked Veglia gauges that I sent you a picture of a couple of weeks ago.

I do not know that he stopped selling as much as he stopped running a store.
