Update..

Amal is working on producing 900-series carbs in AL. They have not been officially released and therefore do not show on their web site or in the dealer price list. Coventry Spares is the only place that got any and that was due to the age of their backorders. The point of the AL is reduced weight. According to Amal for the 600-series "The aluminium carburetor offers a weight reduction of around ¾ lb over the traditional zinc alloy type."

Amal continues to have trouble producing the 900-seies carbs (standard and premier). For instance, for all my outstanding backorders, they can only supply one today that is for Norton and three that are for Triumph.

Would I be correct to assume that given Amal's casting difficulties, their current casting suppliers are not the same as those originally used back in the 1960s and 70s? Can anyone comment on the wear properties of aluminum carb bodies, as compared to the Mazak bodies, assuming anodized [or dissimilar metal] slides are used?

Nothing on their site talks about 900-series AL. AL 600-series have been available for a long time and you can buy them direct from Amal today. Not true of 900-series. I didn't make it up - came direct from Amal.

I'm guessing that they are not the same - I'm a dealer but don't have inside info. They provide little info on the AL bodies other than weight, here's all they offer (that I know of): http://amalcarb.co.uk/mk-i-concentric-series/600-series/aluminium-premier-carbs.html

The AL 600-series carbs are in Premier only so they have the hard anodized slides and better idle circuit. I'm guessing that the 900-series will follow suit, if officially released at some point. BTW, the AL 600-series Premier carbs costs dealers only a little more than the Zinc-alloy carbs.
 
I have Premiers and like them BUT, IMO the stay-up float is NOT an improvement over the original style float. It IS easier to adjust but the original is more consistent re float-level and, in normal operation, doesn't requires re-adjustment over time.

I admit it I have a long history of dissatisfaction with foam-type carb floats - anybody's - not just Amal. Don't get me started on Quadrajet floats! :eek:

A Premier carb is a Concentric carb. The "Premier" is to differentiate is from the standard 600- 900-series concentric carbs.

The other popular carb on these bikes is the Mikuni single. I can see the reasons (easier to tune vs dual carb; very reliable and few wear points).
Premiers are concentrics. There are now 3 versions, standard (OEM), Premier (anodized slides, stay up floats, removeable pilot jetting), Aluminum body for better long term wear/lighter weight.

Greg Marsh on this forum can supply Amal products at about the best pricing point.
 
My only gripe is that the pilot jets are fractional too long and there isn't enough clearance to take them out in situ...
When i next have the carbs off i will shorten the heads by a small amount so they can be removed.... as it will make setting them up so much quicker & easier
