I'm looking into getting a 18" rear rim for better rear tyre selection.
What are the pros and cons of Valanced vs Unvalanced Alu rims ?
If any ?
Thanks for any insight.

The alloy rims were I believe valanced for strength originally?
Nowadays alloys can be a bit more controlled in manufacture, that's my understanding
I had flangless a morrad Motocross type rim fitted to the back of my commando
With the added bonus of not collecting water and dog piss

Balanced rims look period. Thats the only reason to choose them.
'Because I can' is never a good reason for doing anything. If you have an old bike, attention to detail is only important if you really appreciate what it is. I think 'looking period' is very important. My Seeley 850 has Japanese parts on it. One of them is the RG250 tachometer. It exactly fits the original Seeley mount, and is a dead ringer for the tachos which were use on the top race bikes in the 1950s. The only thing wrong with it is the Suzuki 'S' which is inside on the face, where I cannot get to it to paint it out.
It even has the reversible gearbox on the back. I have three of those tachos - they usually cost about $50, and they are the correct ratio. The reverse their direction, you just take out two screws and turn the gearbox over.
Anyone looking at my bike would probably not notice the tacho, except for some old guys who actually know what they are looking at.
I am pretty strict with myself in caring that my bike looks as it should. I have the advantage that I started going to road race meetings in 1953, and I know what was good.
If I take my bike to a race meeting, the kids usually come and go all over it, checking everything out. I think is is a heap of garbage, but they seem to love it.

My mate has Akront rims on his 650 Triton racer - I notice them, but I don't think anybody else does.

Thanks gentlemen,
Pretty easy for me to get Unvalanced ,undrilled 40 hole rims here without having to import any..
As to dog piss ,Once hooked up an electric fence unit to the rims to stop the neighbours dogs pissing on one of my cars mag wheels.
Went out during the day,got home with a couple of mates set the trap ,opened a few cold ones and waited until dark.
The resulting yelps had us in fits of laughter .
( The dogs stopped pissing on my wheels as well )
Cheers

I peed on an electric fence on the way home from the pub once. Only did it once.

I brought my Akront rims back in 1980 when doing the Featherbed conversion paid $90 each undrilled but I kept the 19" rims, cost me $80 to get them drilled, new spokes and Commando hubs laced up, to this day they still look great and they made a difference to the handling.

Electric cattle fences lol when I first moved out of home I lived in a old farm house that had electric fences all around to keep the cattle in, my blue cattle dog when he first went under the fence he got zapped but he look at me wondering why I kicked him was so funny and the look on his face but after a short time he realized it was the fence doing it when he put his nose on it, after that it didn't worry him and had no problems going under the wire.
A mate moved in next door and had a footy club boys night there with naughty girls and lots of beer, was so funny watching drunks pissing on the fence getting zapped one drunk was so drunk he fell over while pissing and got caught up in the barb wire, I pissed myself from laugher and when his mates were trying to pull him off they were getting zapped, the fence was a pulsating zap 24 volts, but it was so funny watching the action, the girls were good as well lol.
