A heads up for any with Alton electric starter, my bike started running total loss electrics over the weekend and culprit found tonight - the two wires off the alternator were tucked around (1 over, 1 under) the composite facing on the stator and the lower one has worn through from rubbing on the edge :(. A bit of delicate soldering to follow.
Not sure whether I tucked it around there or whether that is the factory routing - photo shows the wires now in front of the F rather than behind.
On the good news front an Odyssey PC625 battery can run total loss for quite some time, inlcuding using the electric leg, for a good chunk of 220 miles/350km and still be in the low 12's for voltage.

While poking around have also noticed that the starter chain has been rubbing on the back of the stator mounting plate. Up and down marks so looks to be chattering on there when the engine is running, which may explain a jingly noise i have never been able to track down.
There is an Alton note in circulation recommending spacing the stator off its mounting plate with a washer as some have had the chain short on a coil or two, looking at this it may be wiser to space the mounting plate out instead. This would mean fitting a new top hat bush.
This has been in use for nearly 10 years so some wear and tear is to be expected.

Hi Iain, is that using the Alton supplied chain? When I installed mine I had also purchased an IWIS chain from the then Andy chain man, but when I went to install it the pins fouled the mounting plate just like that so I didn’t use it. If you do space it out with washers, I wonder if the bush could be pressed out, and then to keep the status quo, remove the corresponding thickness from the bush flange before pressing it back in?

Hi Cliff, good question on the chain. I had his duplex primary for a while but an unfortunate incident where the primary ran dry killed that. I can't remember for sure on the starter chain, and there are no markings on it, it could be although I don't see an old one in the stores.
The bush will need some added, the shoulder is on the rear, but it may be possible to press it out, add a small spacer and press it back. I have someone lined up to do Yves fix in a month or so, will try to resolve all then.

Nice job Iain. Did you do anything about the chain rub issue?

Not yet, will wait until the gent is available to do the Yves fix and do all of that at once.

No Yves fix for me, turns out the Alton design has changed over time. Mine is an early one and the O.D of the piece to have the flats machined onto is only 25mm and not 30mm so not enough meat to work with.
The rubbing chain is an iwis one so will return to the original.
