Advice - RGM kickstarter removal

Before I put on my blue and white apron I am seeking advice on removing a RGM kickstarter.
It is:
1) Rather tight on the spline
2) Very smooth and chromey
3) Very close to the gearbox casing (maybe 3mm) so not much room for a puller.
In years gone by I might have been tempted to use an appropriate screwdriver and hammer and put up with the resulting damage.
Anyone done this with class?

PS: the reason for removal is to "tune" the hair-spring to improve neutral selection.
 
A wide blade screwdriver gently wedged into the gap will spread it enough for easy removal. Keep the screwdriver in the gap for easy assembly afterward.

Sometimes it is necessary to modify the claws of a puller. Grinding the claws down to 3 mm should leave them strong enough to pull the kickstarter arm. Try your automotive parts suppliers for battery cable pullers. I have one such puller that is a commercially made puller for battery cables .... I would not try to remove a cable from a battery post without one.

Couldn't find a appropriate puller Robert, so made special tool #334.7.
It's a broken then ground down paint scraper - pull bolt out, put the blade of #334.7 into the slot (nice neat fit) then put the bolt in from the bottom and carefully jack the spline open a bit. Pulled off easily!

I'd be interested to hear more about "tuning" the hair spring? I don't think I've heard of that before.

Remove the bolt completely and as others have said wedge the gap to open the spline on the kicker and it will slide straight off without any damage its the only way I can get mine off and comes natural for me to do it this way, no need for a puller, after its off to put back on usually just tapped back on with a soft face hammer.

It was clever using the bolt as a jack screw!

I vote that Rob solved the OP's problem in the most elegant way.
