Hi Guys,

I could do with a little of your wisdom, not quite sure which way to go, as it's a bit of a chicken and egg scenario.

Firstly...The frame is bent, found a place nearby that can stick in in their jig, get it corrected. The prop stand lug seems to have been replaced at some point in it's checkered past, but who ever made the lug got the angle at which it sticks out utterly wrong and abandoned it. So just behind the lug someone has welded/bolted a replacement to the frame. I'm going to have to bite the bullet and cut both the lug and the replacement and make a proper one and weld it back in. I seem to remember seeing a reference drawing on to how to make a new prop stand lug? Anyone know where I could find it?

The more important question I'd like to ask is; Should I do the work on replacing the lug before, or after I've had the frame straightened?

All the best,

Steve

A couple questions on bent frame/ prop stand lug

The bracket is available from Norvil pt# 063049 and not terribly expensive. I second JimC's suggestion to make a template from the Old Brits website. I don't think it makes much difference whether you weld the bracket on before or after straightening, although theoretically the straightening should be the last repair job on the frame. I've done this a few times and it's quite straightforward.

Jim C, Dave M,

That's brilliant, thank you both so much! :D

I'll get the bit's on order today. The only way I can think to get the old ones off are to use a cutting disk/ angle grinder. I'm a bit loath to using a gas torch. Speaking of which...What would be the best method of welding the new one on? I've got access to Stick, TIG, and an old gas welder.

Thanks again,

Steve

Assuming proficiency level is the same with all three, I'd opt for the tig.

Hi Jim,

TIG it is then. I did a TIG course a couple of months ago, have been practicing feverishly since. Everything from .8mm to 4mm. I bought some 2mm Aluminum last week, so going to have a play with that when I get time, lol.

Thanks again,

Steve

You may want to preheat the lug. It's quite a bit thicker than the frame.
