You mean a crank not an engine ?
The MK3 crank is wider than the pre MK3, the normal way is to fit the pre MK3 crank and shim it to fit the wider MK3 cases. Going the other way would be a issue as you have to machine 1.5mm or so from each side and the mainshaft on the drive side could be different too as the starter mechanism is there on the MK3.
