My left hand coil packed it in on my way home from the rally. I am looking for options to get home.

Auto coil from the parts store, something that used a ballast resistor would probably work. I think '60s or early '70s Chevy perhaps.

If coil simply shorting to its case then I have gotten home on dual coils+boyah by wrapping shorted to case coil in insulating tape, like clear packing tape and taped it to frame since cant fit tape wrapped back in mounts. Coils get pretty warm so compensate in amount and area wrapped and how tape or cord retained to frame bouncing.

Thomas, if you have a smart phone you can browse the local craigslist where you are stranded and maybe find a british bike for sale where the guy would lend you a coil that you could ship back to him when you get home. Maybe he would have an extra coil that he could sell you. I use a dyna coil now but I still have two 12 volt coils and two 6 volt coils in my parts bin....

Where are you stuck?? I'll search the local craigslist where you are and post and promising links back here in this thread .for you...

You could always find a harley dual lead coil and replace both your coils and just hang the dual coil with some twisted wire...

I'm just off the blue ridge @ the 177.7 mile marker at the Willville M/C campground. I will try UAP today and see what they have. Another option is an old VW bug coil. A local guy who came by knows of someone that restores them. I wish I brought my INOA roster with me so I could find a local Norton owner and do what was stated above. Borrow it to get me home and mail it back to him.
I will see what today will bring.
Cheers,
Tom

there's a guy down the road from Dan, in the town of stuart who advertises "want to buy" any vintage bikes on craigslist, but there's only an email contact, not a phone. Here's his listing link:

I'll keep looking and add more. It's 7 am here so I just barely took a look so far

DogT is in Hume Va a ways from you but within one day UPS service. Ping him likely he can scare up
a 6v coil. Failing that a lot of us can overnight you a coil if you have a address to receive it.
Bad luck on a sunday as most shops are off monday.

Well I got Moto gozzi 6 volt coil from a nice lady 2 miles up the Parkway and I put in and it fires on both cylinders now. My old coil was at 2.2 olms and the M/Gzi coil is 4. Is there going to be any issues with the different rating?
Anyway I am running it up to the top of the B/Ridge Pway so I'll keep you posted.
Cheers,
Thomas

there's a chance you will be fine with a 4 ohm coil all the way home...

Most of the vintage motorcycle places that I can google are in the richmond area, which I assume you are going away from ????

I googled roanoke vintage motorcycles since I thought it would be on your path home and came up with this place to maybe pick up a spare lucas coil

Re: Single coil for Commando with Pazon

I have just had the same discussion with Pazon re tha ALTAIR and they advised the use of a 3 ohn Dyna SEE BELOW.

Thanks for contacting us.

You can use a dual coil in the range 3 to 5 ohms, with both the Sure Fire and Altair systems.

You will normally get higher energy sparks with a 3 ohm coil.
The Altair is quite energy efficient (does not drive the coil hard), so a 3 ohm coil will be a good choice for this system.
Just make sure that the coil is mounted at both ends to a decent heatsink (ideally a sheet of aluminium).
This helps to draw heat away from the core of the coil.

Best regards,

Hey, yeah, I've got a couple of old 6V coils in the storage here. If you want a spare or 2 I'm not far from I84 if that's the road you're taking. Winchester is about 40 minutes away from me. I'd be glad to help but it would have to be tomorrow (Monday) sometime.

You're probably in PA by now.

Thanks DogT and all the rest of you all for great support. I am now in Gettyburg PA. Rolled in with the Interstate not missing a beat. It now starts first kick every time. Tomorrow I should be home.
Cheers all

I was stranded due to a breakdown once when I was young. People helped me... I'm glad you got yourself out of a jam... WTG!

Well I rolled into my driveway at 21:00 with 2536.2 Miles of riding added to my clock. With the Moto Guzzi coil on the starboard side it didn't miss a beat.
My original failed coil was going south slowly which led me to believe it was Carburetor issues and for the life of me I was fixated by just assuming it was the Amals. They were fine but the original failing coil was masking the symptoms. I was just coming off the Parkway arriving at the INOA rally on Monday and I noticed something was amiss (pun intended) the bike which was a one kick to start bike now took 4 to 6 tries to get it going and the bike wouldn't idle anymore worth a damn.
I have to package the Moto/G coil back to Patricia G, a Really Nice Lady in Virginia that lent the coil to use to get me home. Patricia is @ the 4 minute mark on the video. I will do that tomorrow and a special thanks that goes to Will at Willville Motorcycle Campground. He was determined to get me on the road again. I am going to plug Will's link so if you are ever on the Blue Ridge Parkway, stop by and sit a spell.
