Hi Guys, I am collecting for a Mk3 Roadster that I am rebuilding and as the original loom is toast I am looking for a new replacement, my choices appear to be wassell/Lucas, British Wiring, and what Andover sell [am unsure of their supplier, I would rather buy a complete loom than try and make one [yes I know the Mk3 has 5 sections] can any body offer recommendations or alternatives.
Thanks Al

Decide which components you want or will be needing after that. Then build up your own harness with what you will like/ need.

Hi Al,

I used wiring harnesses from Andover a few years ago for a MK3 build, and was very satisfied with them. I've made my own wiring for other bikes over the years, but if you're mostly restoring the bike, and not making lots of mods, a new stock one is really the simplest way to go. It's much more work to make your own. On the other hand, for a custom bike with lots of changes, making your own will certainly give you a tidier arrangement, and you can use modern waterproof connectors.

Ken

Thanks Ken, yes my plan is to keep it stock looking with lucas [type] indicators etc and as I am now of an age where all my old racing injuries are coming back to bite I want a working electric start!

AN sells the new stock loom , I bought one recently for my 2nd MK 111. There are a couple of mislabeled ends with it though. LAB identified the changes to be made/noted .

I was pretty happy with my Mk2 British wiring looms. I did delete the Interpol and points specific wiring, however.

In retrospect, I should have gotten a decent small fuse block with a couple spots for relays and built my own.

My AN one for a MK2a lasted 2 weeks before the fuse stopped making contact inside the fuseholder, I replaced it with a blade fuse. I have now gone back to using TMS Motorcycles harnesses made by Autosparks.

Thanks Kommando I have not heard of TMS before but that is probably explainable as i'm in New Zealand, what this post is for is to see who recommends what as I am about to spend quite a bit when you take the NZ dollar into account.

Autosparks/TMS supplied my first ever harness back in mid 80's. It was for a B44 that fried it's earth, I replaced it with the TMS one and used silicone grease on every joint and connector. Still have the bike and never had any electrical issues.

If all stock, then a new loom is good. But, if you're going with a Rectifier/Zener replacement and Electronic ignition, the standard loom is a pain, especially on a MKIII.

The last one I did for a MKIII was a new loom because the owner already bought it. I ended up unwrapping the main loom, getting rid of all the extra wires, adding those needed, and re-wrapping - would have been much faster/easier to just make one from scratch. The MKIII is harder because it mostly doesn't use Lucas bullet connectors and I've never found a good pin extractor for the Molex-type connectors they use.

Due to cost, 1 NZ dollar buys .47 pound or .58 American dollar, I am considering the 5 Lucas looms[full rewire] as I can buy locally, has any body used them? again any feed back greatly appreciated.

British Wiring harnesses are Autosparks harnesses.

British Wiring was born when Roger Davis, owner of Autosparks Ltd., a premier provider of wiring harnesses and electrical components in the UK, expanded his business into the U.S. and Canada.

Are they from Tim @ BMP in Auckland? If so, I think they are from British Wiring. Give him a call and ask, I find Tim to be very helpful and candid.

If they come from the S. Island, I would give Tim a call.

Either way, I would replace the glass fuse with a waterproof blade from Jaycar.

Got all my wiring looms from Tim in Auckland, they seem to be very good quality and well made. After unwrapping the main and headlight looms, removing all the redundant wires, then re-wrapping with Hellerman cloth loom tape. In the end I chopped off all the bullet connectors on the new headlight loom, also the original nylon plugs from the handlebar switches. I replaced all connectors with Deutsch waterproof connectors. I also ran a thin earth wire from the indicator bulb holders to a common earth inside the headlight shell. Haven't done the connectors under the tank yet, will do this next winter. Got some good advice from Grant Tiller, also a coloured custom wiring diagram, which was a great help. The hardest job was soldering new bulbs onto the old warning light bases
