Rear Wheel Sprocket Changed and other ideas
Well I’m going for gold this time, standard 50 tooth , but this time gold, just took a couple weeks from ordering to when it landed on my doormat

New front sprocket and what chain did you decide on ?
Standard Regina one for chain & standard front sprocket, the Cush drive rubbers were out of stock, so I’m ordering them this week now,I’ll call b4 I order them

Regina ZRP good choice ! With regular lubrication will last many miles . I would say 20,000 miles are possible. I am at 14,000 miles same factory chain and its not worn out yet !!

Did you order by phone? Just planning ahead. May be better if I go through AF1.
I emailed max & stated what I wanted, he emailed back with the cost & listed items with part numbers,it’s initially a Pro Forma invoice number with details of an on line transfer, but I just rang & Paid with a card on the blower ( telephone). Oh and I do believe the front sprocket is slightly different in the size of the spline on the Mk2 engine,so the number in picture is for mark 2 engines

I've had excellent results direct from Norton on most occasions, but not all. Glad to hear it. They tend to steer the US market to the dealership (s?) to be fair to them, and I understand that. Just that the dealerships prefer to bulk order to keep shipping down and that can involve a long wait. Unless of course, the part is in stock.

All done now, here is a note to my mechanic friend (from TonyA)to carry out the work,I reckon it’s a good guide in a quick no nonesense nutshell ,the front sprocket was tough to get off so some persuasion from a hot air gun was needed, good clean up req now

Hello Richard , I look forward to your 20,000 mile anniversary . We are too far along to turn back now hey ? I will be right behind you .

I used to be indecisive but now I'm not so sure!!

I am still giving serious thought to going down to a 17 tooth front sprocket. The CR is an instrument of torture for my old body, so it only gets used as a Sunday morning thrashing toy; 200 Km and the lads are lifting me off it! Never gonna tour on it so am pretty sure that going down one tooth for a little more low end grunt (at the expense of top end) would be a smart choice for me. Think we've had this discussion before but the updated opinion of those who have already switched to a 17 tooth would be most welcome. Thanks.

Steve

Hi Tony ,won’t be this year ,but I’ll get close ,” winters coming” as they say in Game of Thrones, shorter days, cooler temps etc, but I’ll go out down to 10 degree C.

I have done it , but not permanently . I ran it for a couple of months last year. It revs through the gears good and fast . I bet it chops 1/2 second off the quarter mile time or MORE. Top speed down to about 118 mph or so . It gets to top end in a HURRY and on the rev limiter always. The speedo on a gearbox mounted sensor is reading WAY high at least 10 % high . The response is amazing , and if you are after this kind of aggressive riding it is hard to beat. I was riding faster , too fast always ! BUT warning you will be reving the NUTS off of it.

Thanks Tony, I’ll give it some more thought. I certainly don’t want to be swapping front sprockets regularly, nor do I want to be banging against the rev limiter all of the time. As ever with these things, I’m not gonna know unless I give it a go!

Thanks again, Steve.

I was always going for a none existent extra top gear on mine, personally, I’d have thought lowering the gearing would make the bike worse overall. But I never tried it.

"Overall" , That is the key word . If maximum acceleration is your goal the 17T cannot be beat. With the 17T , the 961 can actually be called QUICK ! This is a real world opinion and experience.

Tony,

This is for sure.

And this is why the bike should've had a 6 speed gear box. Dreer was going to offer this as an option.
The Baker gearbox in the Norton prototype was basically a Sportster unit with a different shifting drum and 6th gear removed.
6th would be an overdrive for the highway, 1st would be slightly lower so that the 1st 5 gears could be spaced to maximize acceleration.
That would have worked nicely with the original 18T engine sprocket.

Agreed , I have read that there is a 6 speed transmission upgrade for Harley Sportsters available .

Well, you’re making me wish I’d tried it now Tony !

That's OK , You have officially been freed from bondage . No more Norton worries or hand wringing . You gave it a good go , and we will let you know what happens beyond the 20,000 mile event horizon .
