Smart for 2019 DGR Smart for 2019 DGR

I've been trying to clean my cylinder head but despite no leaks the burnt in grime from earlier years persist. With the DGR coming up I sure would like to make her stand out a bit. Any idea's from the experienced?

Acetone should remove those stains. Get some cotton wool, and long tweezers to hold a ball of it, dip and wipe. Do it out in the open ;)

Got to get mine ready too. I’m registered for the Zürich ride again, how about you?

Cheers,

cliffa.

I use brake cleaner and compressed air.
Best to do this outside, brake cleaner is nasty.
Spray a small amount of brake cleaner on the stain then hit it with the compressed air right away. You might have to repeat a few times.

This stuff is great if you can find it in your area.
Removes everything, cooked on grease, oil stains, bug guts, and your skin too if you don't use rubber gloves.
Nasty stuff, but nothing else like it.
I use it to remove cooked on grease, and stains that get into the pores of the aluminum.
Take care not to get it on paint/plastic/fiberglass/carbon fiber - it will dissolve these, remove it immediately.

As stipulated on the container - vapors are harmful - use it in a well ventilated area.
It's a little bit of a toxic landfill, in a can.

I've done the same thing with acetone and with lacquer thinner.

I may go on one of the Seattle rides. I took the Commando last year, maybe I'll take my 67 TR6C this year.

Oven/BBQ cleaner and also had good results with SimpleGreen HD on thick grimey oil.

Vapor blasting cleans a bare head, but I don't think I'd try it with the head on the engine.

What are the Seattle rides. Had heard there is one onto Vashon Island, but what others?

There are three with different starting locations, but they appear to all end at the same place. To my knowledge none go to Vashon Island. Someone may have confused the DGR with the annual Isle of Vashon TT vintage bike ride.

I've had both brake cleaner and carb cleaner melt paint off whatever I was working on. Be careful and test a little on your cylinder before you go nuts spraying it on. On the other hand if it easily remove paint from the cylinders, please do let us know cuz those are a bitch to strip!

Got it. DGR is a charity ride. I guess I did know the Vashon Island thing was a TT. I lived in the Shorewood area of Seattle from 1959 to 1965, Shorewood Elementary School. Used to peddle a bicycle to the Fauntleroy ferry to Vashon Island.

a .22 caliber bore brush does a good job BETWEEN the fins, however it will change the texture so don't use it where the surface is visible.

I soaked an Amal carb in a container of acetone for about a month. It really cleaned the exterior surface very well, getting into all the little nooks and crannies. In organic science lab classes in university we'd use it to clean glassware of built up baked on brown goo.

WD40 and 3M scotch bright medium pad. You will be amazed at what this takes off and is not harmful to paint, etc. Try it on bare aluminum.

Actually The Scotch pad and WD40 worked pretty well, but I have just discovered that Solvol Autosol on a toothbrush works really well.

All dressed up and somewhere to go..

Have a great day tomorrow, I hope the weather wherever you are is as good as it's forecast here.

I'm currently in third place in terms of funds raised in the Zürich ride, so if anybody can help get a Norton further up the podium, please donate anything here..
