Norton Manxman

Bodger said:
The Manxman seat and the seat for the early Atlas with the similar small tank was longer than the seat for the normal tank/slimline bike. The base of the seat extends beyond the half rounds pressed into the seat for the rubber inserts that the two rearward facing prongs on the frame fit into. If you look at the advertisements and the Cycle World review for the Manxman it's obvious that the seat is extended to fill the gap that would exist if the other seat was used. BTW very cool very original looking Manxman in the picture.

Unfortunately I'll have to disagree on you. I don't need to look at a magazine pix. I had the red manxman seat in my hands, took measurements and then a pix of THE seat, which is in my files. The pix of the seat includes a tape measure laid on it to show what I have said in text.
We studied the difference between his seat and my regular atlas seats at great length. For comparison...I own 4 atlas'. The fender dzus hole position was also determined and measured as part of the investigation.
The manxman seat is back in posession of the owner of the manxman that is currently a few feet away from me in the shop where I personally am doing mechanical service work on it. The owner took the seat back home since I don't need it cluttering up my shop.

PER ANNA
Norton Manxman's never had any Allen bolts or Screws fitted too them

Sorry Annna The engine I am assembling DOES have 2 studs with nuts and 2 allen bolts to hold the carbs on.
The two front head fixings on every norton twin that I have worked on since 1971 has two 5/16CEI studs in the barrels and this manxman has two BOLTS. The current owner did not change them, and we believe he is the first to dismantle this engine back around 1990.
You need to forget it RAYSONS WILL NOT TOUCH THESE SILENCERS WITH A BARGE POLE I have Sent THEM PHOTOS To hard to make there 2 baffles one in the other so you see there not that easy to make has other makes would have made them by now

Now the 2 studs and two allen head bolts 5/16ths whitworth are for single carbuettor manifold ! for 650 and 750 atlas

THE parts you refer to ( maybe?? for a single mainfold) and are NOT the parts I quote (BY NUMBER) on 9 Dec 2016 which are for dual carbs on my freinds manxman project and new extra ones are sourced from andover norton and ARE the same as originals from the OEM manxman in my shop.

So in final conclusion you are wrong (again)

your only relating to the home model parts manual and not the export Manxman 650s own part manual 36 pages in A4 produced by Berliner motors new jersey which reads four 5/16ths studs and nuts, the two Allen bolts were for the single manifold fitment for a single carburettor which was optional I do have this item thank you do have a nice Christmas

Skip,
Contact Raysons Exhaust UK. Ben is a good guy, and can make whatever it is you need for old British exhausts.
Wouldn't mind seeing photos of the Manxman you friend is restoring.

As a word to the wise, I'd steer clear of Anna J Dixon on the NOC. That is unless you like talking to a complete blabbering idiot.
Best of luck, the Manxman is a great machine.
Jeff
now the guy that said words to the wise of me Anna J Dixon has no idea who I am nor has he even met up with me He is only judging me by my female name witch is baised of female Motorcycle enthusiasts and owners, It is this man this talking commplete utter rubbish It was only me that as done years of research on these mototcycles And have owning a very early Norton Manxman for years and restoring them to factory specifiactions And I have Contacted Rayson and others in this businness And He and others did not want to know anything about making Exhaust for the Norton Manxman model as they are to complexed to make So there you have it

You are responding to a comment posted over NINE YEARS AGO…

Reactions: baz
Jeff is now out of the Norton hobby, having sold off his collection.

Anna J is responding to 9 year-old post saying she (or he) is only being judged for a female name.

dynodave no longer posts much on here and has pulled down most of his work via webpages dedicated to pre-Commandos.

It looks like the future for "Other Nortons" is getting brighter every day!

Frankly, I don't think anyone cares what member names are being used here as long as the contributions are accurate and helpful so that historic information about these machines gets shared and passed down.

I agree.

On top of that, my point was that irrespective of the issue at hand, or the rights and wrongs, it is surely a no go to have a ‘discussion’ whereby we have a 9 year gap between questions and answers !!

I must mark my calendar to check this thread in 2032 for an update from AJ …

I do feel like the "other Norton motorcycles" forum has a post count low enough that it might as well just be a group text.

(spoken as an 'other Norton' owner)

I have read this thread from the beginning, and when I read Jeff's comments regarding Anna J they seemed to me to be out of order. I would certainly regard anyone making such vindictive comments with a deal of caution. I have read quite a few of Anna J's posts regarding the Manxman, and while she may not always be completely coherent, she appears to be very knowledgeable on the topic and as such is an asset.
I agree 9 years is a long time, but the comments (which were unmoderated) were hurtful and obviously not forgotten.

Phil.

She was banned off of the NOC UK forum for abusive comments to others

I wouldn’t argue with that. Being called a ‘blabbering idiot’ is hardly polite conversation !

Still… 9 years…!?

Plus, I see zero evidence that anyone was judging anyone on their ‘female name’. ‘Blabbering idiot‘ may well be rude, but it is gender neutral rude !

Anna is decended from a very famous line of Motorcyclists , she was a very competant proffesional engineer and has/had some very good engineering facilities at her home . She is now getting on a bit and in poor health and suffers from dyslexia which is why she is a bit hard to follow sometimes. She has plenty to contribute so just give her some slack. If you are fortunate enough to get old its possible that in time you could match her skills.

I have to reply to this post to set some facts straight.
Anna has often said she remembers uncle Freddie bouncing her on his knee. Fred Dixon died over 67 years ago. Anna is approximately 66-67 yrs old. The dates don't match up for a child to remember things like that, casting doubt over her claim to be a relative.
She has never been a professional engineer (marine or otherwise). She was a bargee on a canal boat.
She was instrumental in forming our local Noc branch.
She has claimed that she has competed in the sidecar TT. Not true. One of our regular branch attendees went through all the TT programs that covered the years that she claimed to have raced there. (the programs list all the TT competitors for the events) Her name never appeared.
She was responsible for the branch having to move venues because of things she did/or said that upset the landlords.
When she does attend branch meetings, quite often the chairman has to ask her to be quiet as she talks over the person who has the 'chair'
She has been reprimanded by our committee in the past for organizing events in the Noc name without asking the branch first.
The vast majority of Norton owners around the world have never met her. Those that have, know what she is like.
When the chairman has had to ask her to be quiet, she then accuses him of a hate crime and threatens legal action.
All the above is fact.
I very much doubt, Norton Bob, that you have actually met her and that you are just repeating what she has told you. For you to say she 'was a very competent professional engineer' is just a load of cobblers. That is a myth that gets perpetuated on websites such as this. The danger is that someone believes what she says and then spends money buying/doing whatever and all goes horribly wrong.
