A few words of warning about aftermarket oil filters: I have my oil filter modified for the larger 3/4-16 thread that lets you use readily available (and cheaper) car filters. One day I was coming off a stop sign and I thought my rear tire had picked up a nail because the rear end started fishtailing. It wasn't a flat tire. What happened was the oil return line from the engine to the filter had blown off its fitting, and was pumping my engine oil all over the rear end of the bike. If I hadn't felt the rear end fishtailing it would have destroyed my engine. Norton uses straight smooth tubes on the oil filter mount with barely enough room for one small hose clamp. Not good! Turns out my new aftermarket oil filter created just enough extra back pressure to blow the oil lines off of the tubes, even though the hose clamps were tight. I didn't want to go back to the stock oil filter, so I modified my filter mount by drilling and tapping, and installing barbed tube fittings. No more problems with blown hoses.
Use all the aftermarket filters you want as long as they are "Freeflow" and have a low bypass of 7 to 9 psi. This is what the NAPA PS 7013 and the KN153 has for specs.

Last time I looked here in the UK the K&N was very expensive, I would imagine a Ducati OEM oil filter would be the best part £20 - that's a lot of dollars. The MANN filters I last purchased were about £6 each, it seems that filters are better priced in the US as are a lot of car cleaning compounds. I always check them out when I'm in the USN base exchanges or supermarkets when my ship visits the US.

I went to pick up a oil filter at the local NAPA. Not in stock I had to wait a day, then they wanted $36 for it. It was identical to the Mann filter in the first post. Left it there.

I think some stores pretty much charge what they want to rip people off. Recently I needed a tap. It was $3 on the advance auto website---- I went to the local store and asked them if they had it, and they said no but they could order it if I wanted. I asked them if there was a shipping fee, and the guy said NO. So I said ok get it. Then he asked me to prepay $9.xx. I said it's only $3 on the website, wtf?? Walked out

Maybe try another store and they will charge you similar prices closer to what everyone is reporting

I just purchased 4 NAPA 1352 oil filters. They were all Blue MANN filters. They sell them to commercial dealers at approx $8.50 each, that means a retail over the counter cost of about $10.95, in most stores. Ask your Local NAPA to order you some, with out any time constraints (no special freight that way). Hope this helps

I never understood this adapter/oil filter bit. Cheaper? What would you save on a lifetime supply of filters?

Back "in the old days" the filters for the Commando were not so plentiful. Now you can just pop down to the NAPA and pick one up.

I went down to the local Canadian Tire Store and they ordered me in a KN 153 for $10.49.

I think it's not just the price, but with the adapter you can find them anywhere. And they are less than half the price as the original needed ones. It's kinda both, I have the adapters on both bikes. But to each his own.

Like the man said, I don't need no stinking oil filter.....   Adapt,,, overcome,,, sustain

I use the Baldwin B474. No adapter needed. They are longer (more filter media) than the stock filter . Last time I bought them (case lot of 4) they were about $8 each at a local supplier.

I figured I'd bring this thread back to life rather than start a new one.

I picked up a Napa 1032 locally and it appears to be a good fit for my 850 MkIII. I haven't started the bike yet, though, so I can only comment on the spin-on fit. The previous filter had been on there so long it required the old screwdriver-through-the-filter-to-spin-it-off technique.

I'd like to use these based upon local availability, price (sub-$9) and the 10 micron filter size. Will this work as a filter for me?

It appears to have all the right stuff, low bypass, free flow. I think you're good to go.

Why not buy or make a threaded adapter to screw on your filter plate and use a car filter for half the price of a motorcycle filter. There are many talented machinist out there that can do it for you. The UFI guzzi filter works fine too @ $7.00 ea. Been using them for years. Right now with an adapter I use a fram 3614, them same one for my wife's Toyota. With the money you'll save you can change the oil more often...........

The WIX 51348 is a 21 micron filter. For probably the same price you can get the 51032 which is 10 micron and you don't need the $19 adapter. Only trouble with WIX is they are white.

+1

So easy to get a filter that fits that (only to me) there is no reason to have adapter. Fleetfilter.com has NAPA 1352 about $8 ea shipped. AKA WIX 51352. Last ones I got were blue, time before was white, but I worry more about which way people's plug caps are facing. :D

Thanks, I needed a sanity check. I figure I can paint it if the white color bothers me. At that price, plus the specs and the fact they're on the shelf down the road, I figure I can't go wrong.

I had an oil line break on my Sunbeam Tiger in my friend's driveway, leaving around a gallon of oil behind, so I'm leery of changing oil system components from spec without a lot of research. I ended up putting a threaded adapter on the block and installing a spin-on filter for a Renault (sound familiar?) as compared to the stock remote oiler system since it had fewer points for failure.

I also irrationally worry about my oil in my vehicles, and I'm considering sending off oil samples to be burned periodically in the Norton like I do my GMC.

What i find a little confusing is why the guys in the US are useing the thread adaptor when Harley Filters are readily available HI Flo HF172 / EMGO O07800
fits 1980`s FLH / FX / XR models and will fit directly on to the OEM thread are Harley filters difficult to source ?
