Thinking about commando prices , what’s your opinion ?

And, I must ask, are zero toxins created by production of electricity????

And, are not the sources of electricity production ALSO finite??

If one was an original owner machine (with dealer papers), and had a cNw e-start would that make any difference? Just curious.
Can't say but this I can. I sold a completely rebuilt 850 last year for $12,500. But the guy wanted some extras. He wanted the spare new tank and side covers painted in red I had, he wanted the cNw electric start and 520 chain, and a bunch of other things. Before we were done with shipping to CA he paid about $19,000 (don't remember exactly). Why didn't he have me rebuild a MKIII? He wanted right shift.

No... Sorry, I wasn't trying to promote the alternatives as ideal in their current (no pun intended!) form.
Just pointing out that alternatives are going to be needed rather than wanted...

Back to the original question. Worth: What a ready, willing, and able seller will take; and a ready, willing, and able buyer will give.

Voila!

WAY easier than converting a right sifter to the left side...

As long as the St Lawrence river flows and the FDR Power Project is viable, there will be no toxins created and an infinite span of electricity production where I live.

You "green" folks ALWAYS seem to overlook Life Cycle Cost, which involves AMAZING amounts of resources to build and keep hydro plants operational. tsk tsk... You really can't keep overlooking the costs in resources and manpower that it takes these "free" sources of power able to produce all that "free" power. Just google the operational budgets of those two entities, then factor in the nationwide equivalent.

NOTHING is free, but the air we breathe.

...and ABSOLUTELY nothing is "infinite".

How long before somebody starts converting Norton Commandos to electric motor and battery?
There must be better candidates, not least because the Commando design includes isolastics for a reason, and an electric motor negates that reason and some, why carry the weight of something designed to mitigate a problem you no longer have?

The best design for an electric bike is a design for an electric bike! I understood Peter Williams had some ideas for that!

Ya, but it looks nothing like a stock Commando.
The part we were discussing, left-foot-shift MkIII, converted to right-foot-shift is all that matters in this case. not hard at all, almost infinite resources for retrofit left foot rearset controls and not hard to convert stuff to fit.

What was the question again.
If you bought any 850 Commando brand new then put it in a magic bubble that day, it will be worth a lot less now than if you had bought a house instead.

Can you turn a profit on a "restored" Commando, no. (Any self labour charge would sink that in the water unless you are some form of charity case)
In the time it took to type that (not long) my Africa Twin ($21k with extra's) devalued but who cares when I can't see it ever being for sale like many other bikes be they over or under their monetary input.
I have sold three motorcycles since the early 1990's. (1978 CBX / 1974 TR5T Trophy Trail / 1954 Sunbeam S7 Deluxe)
My Eldorado and Mk2a (and other bikes) probably went up a little but a moot point if not for sale even for triple any perceived value.

You would need your head read if your next job plan was making money off Commando's. (on topic)
Flipping barn finds to old duffers with rose coloured glasses might be something else.

Electricity has to be created. Fossil fuels do not.

Yes, there is refining.

Still, THAT is the difference. Creation of energy takes energy. That inconvenient part generally is left out,

Then, electricity suffers transmission losses that typically exceed transport losses for motor fuels.

The entire subject mirrors a lot of the junk thought we are getting from Fauci, the CDC, Pharma, etcetera.

Where is the “double blind peer reviewed consensus study?”

Political forces are less than rational.

Oh, as for FMV, that’s not my interest or the point, for most of us. Nice to know that my ‘73 isn’t losing value AND that I can ride it, use it up, more or less for free. Considering what I paid for her back in ‘76, and that the internals of the crankcase and trans haven’t seen daylight since England, I’m happy. As for value, the best thing I ever did was paying CR Axtell to port her head. The now hard to find 1970s Borrani rims remain a great modification too. What’s she worth? Not for sale. And, I say that despite the fact that the status of my medical recovery from my October 2020 accident still proceeds but keeps me off my bikes for now.
I see my delusions are shared by another!

Yup, kids today thinking of bikes have a sea & varieties to flavor. Tons of solid cheap jap bikes galore out there to sample & taste.

Hey, lets have a quick look at bmw

06 f800 twin 85hp, even a 360 crank like that means anything, 2.5k

Then lets see, how much those old Norts go for? What? Need special tools & cant fix 'em anywhere?? Have to deal with old guard boomers?? lol

What do BMW's have to do with the thread ?
In saying that I rode a 1974 R90S ? (a few hundred kms) and a K100LT ? once ,it was the closest I came to being in a coma to date.

Modern BMW s are one of the most unreliable motorcycles produced today.
I'll stick with the Norton, I can fix it.

One thing that's changed, 50 years ago 'a lot' of people could and did complete their own maintenance and repairs. Fast forward (slow forward?) to 2022 and I know very few people who are competent on the tools. What's the impact on the value of our bikes? Does anybody want one just to prove that they can keep one going? Sort of a greaser status symbol?
