Crankcase mating surface cleaning

As such I found many ways of cleaning the crankcase halves in the posts. My problem is with the mating surfaces where the gasket gunge is removed but a very difficult yellowish smear still remains. I have tried thinners as the main cleaner and then got hold of some acetone which is no better to the point that it made me feel quite unwell despite being used outside.
I am now hoping to get an appointment with an ice blaster to see if he can help!
My cases are painted but in not such great condition and therefore ask before hand if somebody can advise to this problem.

I had thought of using them but Was a bit bothered of damaging the mating surface.
Thanks Swoosh I will give it a go.
 
Looks like shellac

The thinner and clear-up solvent you should use with shellac is denatured alcohol. Otherwise known as methylated spirits and coloured purple in UK.

Hello Woody,

As other said, using scotchbrite should help out for dry cleaning. It is time consuming thow. If you want extra clean, you won't have any choice else than some disolvent. Being very careful,(because the painted parts) then you could use Permatex gasket remover kind of, or even regular paint remover. Keep us posted!

Good for cleaning, but take care, if you don't remove every trace of the aluminium oxide it will continue to grind parts you didn't want grinding!

Aluminum will rapidly oxidize in air. Ask any aluminum TIG welder! The fine layer found on cleaned aluminum will not give you any issues. Now parts exposed to the weather for years and heavily oxidized is another issue altogether.
 
Try scraping with a piece of plastic; the piece can be shaped, if necessary, to fit where you need it. This has worked well for me and won't hurt the aluminum. I do suggest that you start gently and gradually increase the effort.

Residue looks like Wellseal. Try rubbing with methylated spirit. Not so smelly as acetone.

Crankcases have oil ways. And the cases are shown with main bearings in. I mean you should clean those thoroughly. No more.
 
MEK isnt user friendly.
Try Wurth Brake Parts Cleaner. Expensive but effective and safe. I use it all the time.
Scotchbrite is the way to go in tandem with the Wurth.

I buy boxes of 6 cans at a time and use it to clean most parts!
