I have just been drawn (reluctantly) out of retirement to travel to Victoria to take all the tooling for the heads out of storage and do a bit of dusting off prior to the manufacture of a new batch of heads for the new owner, John Snead. A run of 30 heads will be cast and on completion, I will oversee the packaging and transport of the heads and tooling to its new home in the USA. The heads will be machined in the USA.

I watched the pallet of tooling drive off to its new temporary home until completion. I'm also to give my recommendations on the distribution network. I have a number of changes planned. Whilst most of my distributors were fair and above board, there was an exception. A certain distributor will be dropped for reasons which may or may not be made public, depending on the settlement.

So, look forward to some new heads sometime next year.

IIRC - by STS in Florida, who make the CNW belt drive kit components.

ah ok, I thought STS were a machine shop, I didnt realise they are a foundry as well

Yeah... I was thinking of that, but wrote belt drive for some reason. Probably because was also thinking of the clutch center. Oh well... almost senile.

Picture of first AMC Commando gear set. We made 3 sets. Two sets have been in testing for one year with over 4,000 miles (6400+ km). We disassembled the boxes last week and the gears look fantastic. So, production will start soon. Lots of small changes in these gears to make them last longer and run smoother

Looks good, after seeing how the current gear teeth do not hold up even with the rear wheel buffers you wonder how long the current replacements will also last.

Wow, they look great.
Slot that lot into a new, stronger, AN shell and one should have a perfect road box without TTI levels of ‘investment’.
John, I hope you’re looking into Commando alloy barrels too...

Nigel, funny you should ask. I was just looking at the CAD models for an alloy 850 cylinder. We should have some machined in the next 2 months. I am still working on how to hard anodize in black without effecting the gasket or bore coating and still have a stock looking black cylinder

New gears are made from material we use for planetary gearboxes that see as much as 8,000 ft/lbs (10,846 Newton Meters) of torque output. They are vacuum heat treated to a full depth hardness. Special cutters were made to have an exact dog face full contact area. The gears after 4,000 miles had no pitting or galling, and had full involute contact. We make over 500,000 gears at the shop per year, and we put our expertise in to making a very fine set, I think, but time will tell
