Took my last ride on the Norton yesterday before rains come tonight bike goes off insurance next week. Did over 200 miles out to Harrison Lake and back. Odo has just gone over 14,150 miles. So in two seasons I've not quite doubled the 7500 on the clock from the first 43 years.
She's running ok but is currently having odd idle where it sits at 1k mostly but when slowing for a stop light, I regularly see it at 1200 and it will not drop if I blip throttle. Also noted the idle screws are not in contact or just barely in contact with throttle completely closed so cannot adjust rpm lower with them. I'm thinking carb bores leaking air. Can't detect leaks at joins etc.
I've reached out to Bruce Chessell and I think I'll send him the carbs for sleeving. At $75 CAD each it seems like a good deal esp with loads of good reports of his work on these forums. I like the idea of keeping the original carb going. Afterall, they been with bike since the beginning.
Plans for winter work include the rear nicker-lastic (need to do it engine in situ); getting into timing chest for first time to have a go at oil pump flatting and replacing seals and chain tensioning. Is there guidance on how to set chain tension without a fancy tool to hold the shaft in right location?
Also thinking to pull head off. Is decoking still a thing on these bikes? I don't see much discussion on that here. Want to assess valves and renew head gasket and see how cylinders look. Might even send head out to Mr. C. For rejuvenation and correcting of the abomination that are my left hand threaded, bastard child, over sized, fugly exhaust roses.
