TonyA finds a Belt Drive

This XR was a good price by the way. I didn't pay top dollar for it. About 4800 pounds .
Is that a good price for a bike that age? It is clean. Is there a premium due its limited availability? I've been offered that for a trade it on my 961. Refused of course.

There may be other XR 1200's

that are cheaper. But none around me. Sportsters are available it just finding an XR that is a bit harder. Hey Voodoo I also liked the Roadster too. But you better drive it before you buy it . The Sportster is an acquired taste , it shakes and vibes too .

I would refuse it too. The Sporsters are available man , everywhere and are inexpensive . If you like one you can get one. The XR is more like the Norton , it has some suspension travel and seat height . The Roadster does too , but the rest of the line up are too low for me. And also these are the only two Sporsters that have a decent front brakes. The fuel economy is also good , not great . I got 47 mpg , I can live with that. Did you also know that they have hydraulic roller valve lifters like the 961 too ? So no adjustments there . And besides , they look so cool in my view. The Big Twins don't appeal to me so much .

I have a xr1200 with mods(suspension, brakes and engine) and find it fun to ride, dead reliable and always brings a crowd on group ride. When I get the 961 on the road (shortly?) I will be interested in comparing the 2.

Oh, absolutely Tony. Long Island is hardcore Harley country and they are a dime a dozen. You can't spit without hitting a Harley dealer. I probably have 4 in a 20 mile radius. That said, that's not a typical Sporty. I don't see too many XR, so you've got a good find there. If you want one, pony up a few more quid. That's a cool bike. All the best with it. And although that pannier bracket may be a little week, it's a good clean design. I've search for that numerous times without luck over the years. Nope.

Tony,
Isn’t the Harley a big V Twin?
John
Hello John yes 1200 cc is big . When we say Big Twin it's not the Sportster they are talking about . It is the other models " The Glides " Road King etc , they are 1600 to 1800 cc. In the Harley world a Sportster is a small starter bike .

Yes , There is a similarity . The Norton is more nimble with its shorter wheelbase and lighter weight. The Norton Brakes and suspension are far better. They both put some form of vibration to the rider . They both pull like a train ! They are both great bikes to own and drive !

What year and what color ? I am still not used to the rubber mounts at idle . How accurate is the speedo on it ? Because I had it going 118 without much effort. So its fast enough , Im sure this one is good for 125 mph or more with ease .

Mine is a 2009 and of course it’s orange( it’s a known fact that their faster). Big piston forks, ohlin shocks, floating front brake disc, custom exhaust, free spirit intake, etc. two of the biggest low cost things you can do— riser blocks for the rear and a quick throttle. Anymore question let me know

Hello Bike Falcon , What is a riser block ? Raises the rear ride height ?

Yes, mine is adjustable and I think it is set at 2 inches. It makes the lazy steering much more like a modern sports bike. The difference in the twisties is nite and day.

No offense but I have absolutely no interest in any Harley.
I was just at the Ton up Ypsilanti show with my Dominator Naked this past Sunday and the rules were “only cafe” bikes. Well guess what?
They lied and allowed 4 custom, newer, big front wheel, bagger Harley’s in the show area. And guess what won the people’s choice award?
One of those ugly Harley’s.
I Was a pretty bit upset with them allowing HD in the show. Especially after they posted no non cafe bikes allowed. Harley owners have enough damn shows and meets. They didn’t need to spoil ours.

This isn’t the bike that won, but same hideous style. FAR FROM A CAFE BIKE !!

some might think it is. owners use them as a T T racer as in tavern to tavern if ridden at all. IMHO these things are a truly useless POS

I think the organizers of the show are culpable here.
How could they allow a custom cruiser to compete as a cafe racer. Duhhhhhh.

In defense of the owner of the cruiser, he probably rode a Big Wheel as a child, and no doubt wanted to recapture that experience.

Indian FTR 1200 per chance ?

Aah is that why FE has been quizzing me about mine lately.... if he is then this is all you need to go from stock to full decat and everything inbetween, just plug in, choose a preset map or customise your own, and play! If only the 961 were so simple...

No offense taken . I have actually been riding Nortons for 43 years. Some people think that the 650 Atlas (new) is ugly too. I live in Milwaukee and its hard not to catch the HD bug .
