I have just cut 20mm off the boot of my factory plug leads, The bike has always had a annoying random miss fire while riding, only a split second but noticeable.

When I changed the plugs I noticed the rubber boot bottomed out before the inner clip was over the plug , which would mean the spark has to jump the gap..
So 20mm off and now it sits on the plug and no more erratic miss.

400 km ride over the weekend and no miss fire.
Worth checking and a simple fix :)

cheers
Paul

One of my spark plugs (left) was barely finger tight and the cap was loose. Man, these things vibe a lot. I know I tightened them up. They ARE long boots on the wires. I use, One 07s. Nice snug fit.

Noticed the same on my rh plug. Took quite a bit of time to wiggle the boot up the lead to make sure the cap was connecting securely to the plug.

I tried moving boot up lead ,but ended up cutting off 20 mm ,has certainly made a difference .

Great to know. Another one to Keep an eye on.

Did I read somewhere that it’s recommended to change the plug leads anyway, one of the first things you should do on the bike? If so, any recommendations?

Matt Capri formerly of South Bay Norton told me they are EPA and Euro specs compliant wires and they are suppressive crap. Between Matt and Richard....I believe. When I changed the wires and installed the genuine Bosch coil, it was quite a noticeable difference.

I installed them because of the generally accepted opinion that the stock ones are ‘crap’.

Now, I’m not arguing against that cos I’m not qualified to do so, but, personally, I didn't notice any difference before and after.

Perhaps, due to poor QA/QC, the stock ones can be crap, but more often than not they are OK.
If you have a misfire or noticeable rough running, then the wires are a likely suspect.
Mine are stock, and I have not experienced any issues.

The larger 8.5mm one07 wires are designed to work with the better bosch coil. If you only change the coil you’ll notice the stock wires are not up to the task.

Had to chuckle. EPA and Euro spec compliant, I was told, was because non compliant wires screwed with airwaves and digital signals to our Wi-Fi, phone and TVs. True or false?

Ive heard non insulting copper cores do like in most older race cars and bikes.

Where are our priorities, man? A decent picture or clear phone conversation over a great running bike? Absurd? Who are these aliens??:eek:o_O

In canada they are trying to gain control of everything we drive to be “green”. Meaning making it really hard to drive and insure classics and modified vehicles. PS. i meant insulating not insulting. Lol.

Changing the wires and coils from new makes a difference. For some bikes minimal and for some huge. But changing is a must in my opinion.

Yep 'tis true but even my '83 Harley has a warning in the handbook that to use lower resistance wires COULD produce enough interference to screw up it's ignition module as well as mess with neighbourhood tv and radio reception :) , they also specify resistance plugs. Luckily you can still buy a set of 4 champions for £7 free post!

I do find the copper core wires to be very polite on my Bonnie. Old school proper British education.
