Incoming - Aluminum Fuel Tank for my Dominator

Does anybody have any idea exactly how much fuel the plastic tanks should hold? My handbook doesn't have a page for dimensions/capacities so I googled it and the wonderweb says 17 litres????

My tank was full to just touching the bottom of the neck (as recommended in the manual) and I've decanted it and could only find 12-1/2 litres with maybe another 250cc left in the tank.... that's a long way short of 17L!!!

Yes, it is!
I thought it was around 13 ltrs plus. One reason I have the alluminum tank now...

Ignore my recent post, talking jibberish, just like our MP's in Parliament, I think that's what distracted me!

OK... I decanted 14 litres from my plastic tank leaving behind around 250cc, so 14.25L capacity to bottom of inner neck.

I put all 14 litres into the ally tank + another 3-1/2 litres, so 17.5L capacity plus still room for a little more but didn't want to test the Monza cap vent at it's extreme.

I only fitted the tank today so not really had the chance to deliberate on how it looks. I think I can just about get away with it against the white but I still think I might paint (or half-paint) the ally tank once my finances have recovered from my other winter project.

If you haven't sealed the vent in the monza cap then I strongly suggest you do so now! Speaking from experience!

Does the tank naturally vent through the small dia. hose that's attached to the underside? What did you seal the cap vent with?

Yes the tank has it's own vent. I just glued it with some fuel resistant epoxy (take it apart and you'll see the hole that needs to be shut off.

I have the monza caps on both of my aluminum tanks and never had a problem with any mess or seeping of fuel on the tank.
I fill my tanks about 1” or 25mm from the top of the tank.

I did use a 4-5mm thick rubber gasket from a automotive oil filter and placed it between the tanks threaded neck and the Monza cap. This also allowed me to align the cap to my liking and prevents the fuel from leaking past the threads.
I may also recommend a dab of anti seize on the threads to prevent galling.

Scott are your caps vented? I specifically bought a vented cap but in hindsight maybe I didn't need to. My cap came with several different thickness of washers and luckily one of them allows the cap to be screwed down tight and orientated with the hinge forwards. Good call on the anti seize!

On my Commandos aluminum tank I had the factory install gold lettering and stripe to match the painted tank.

Ive also been on the fence of painting inside the out lined area of the tank gloss black and keeping the gold “Norton” and gold pin stripe outline. I just can’t make up my mind.
I would definitely not paint the whole tank. That defeats the whole purpose of having the tank to begin with. It’s a work of art.

Yep. Both are vented.
This is the caps I have.

99% sure that's the same model as mine. I thought it might be alright to begin with, but one day I noticed it leaking - it peeled the Norton letters of the tank! I think it was a case of a full tank on a hot day. No more issues since I blocked the hole.

Same here, I would have it part painted but need to live with it for a while to get a few ideas, just something to break up the vast expanse of alloy. The other option (for me) is to create an alloy rear end and alloy covers for the air box sides but that could get quite fiddly and is outside my skill set.

I think it would look pretty cool with it part painted - would tie it into the rest of the bikes colour scheme.

That's really good ! over 4.6 US Gallons. I was able to drive my 961 Plastic Tank on long trips and without running out of gas . I would pull in to the gas station and put in 3.47 US Gallons . I didn't know how close to running out I was. The aluminum tank may give me another gallon nearly . This would mean 180 miles or more between fill ups.
