Setback

Not a good day...
Gearbox cradle mounted in the frame
Engine laid over on the timing case
Frame lowered over engine & through bolts place through the cradle
Raised the engine & positioned the front ISO carrier & bolted up
Lowered the engine to insert the ISO thorough bolt..... but cant lower the engine low enough??

Why, because the sump plug bolt (head) is colliding with the new side stand cross tube I've had welded in Aaaaaah!!!

Instructions followed to the letter when placing & welding in the tube & side stand bracket, but its in the wrong place and to be honest you couldn't go wrong with placement anyway. But on the 72 with 3/8 sump plug its slap bang central over the cross tube

The 3/8" drain bolt starting in 72(200000) is not different even on 850's until the end -75.
The front crossbar on 71 thru 75 is almost 4" forward of the front drain plug/bolt.
Your placement is obviously wrong - why

instructions bad ?-written or verbal?

Cut and reweld where it surpose to go is the only fix, it always pay to check things out before any welding begins, its so easy to make mistakes and you won't be the only one that has, as the saying goes we learn by our mistakes and even worst when its someone elses mistake.

I quite agreed. but the fact is the brace supplied by AN should be the correct length, especially when you don't have one to reference against.
And bizarrely both end of the brace are machined for the curvature of the frame tubes and the forward taper... when the brace is against the tubes and fully forward the fit is supurb.
AN tell me this is one done only as a guide.... well with no literature supplied or a warning to indicate otherwise. what are you to conclude

I will add = Two parts to this job:
layout new cross tube by putting it in"proper position". Measurements and verification by any and all methods. Drawings, verifying position against several other existing frames of similar era.
The welding is a second area of technical competence completely above and beyond the layout (positioning) of the job.
You could have the best welder in the world, but who laid out the job????

I usually measure 3 times and cut 4 times...

As I dont believe in welding those frames too much [ as they are so thin and light. Welding causes fracturing near the weld ], can you cut a section out of that cross brace, and weld another pc in so it doglegs around the drain bolt?

1971 750 about 95 mm from the front frame Iso mount centre to the back of the cross member, about 125 mm for the same on my 1974 850.
