When operating the SS on my '74 850, the spring always snags up on the protruding mount bolt head. Very annoying having to force the stand all the way until suddenly the spring comes off the bolt head and makes a loud metallic clatter. Attached a shot of the hang up and pre-habg up spring.
Should I continue to try bending the spring ends to get it to clear or do I have an incorrect spring/mount bolt?

On mine, the hook end on the side stand enters from the back side.
Also the original bolt has a thinner head than what you have shown.
The spring should clear the thinner head.
 
It also looks like the bracket is angled (bent?) up higher than normal?

Interesting....my spring (came with the bike as received 2 months ago) has the end hooks on opposite sides of the coiled section....the end attached to stand tab is actually on the lowest side of the coil...therefore forcing the higher side of coil up against the bolt head. All the other posted shot from you folks show a spring with the end hooks on the same (upper) coil side...which should tend to keep the coil away from the bolt head a bit more.

As to the mount bracket angle on frame...kinda hard to tell if this is just a trick of the picture angles or something else. My shots are with bike on CS, roughly/no perfectly square to ground and I did not fully deploy the SS in these shots.
I think I'll source a proper spring to see if that cures it....then maybe try a different bolt with lower profile head. Does seem odd have such a high profile head right there.
 
I'd still say the bracket is not angled correctly but the thick bolt head won't be helping either. Later stands were also narrower section at the pivot with a shorter spacer but I think yours is the later, thinner section stand.

The spring hook at the stand end of your spring is extending from the lowest part of the coil, so the coiled section is higher than it should be.
Perhaps you or whoever fitted the spring managed to twist it through half a turn?
 
Further...after performing a bit of image enhancement...I now see the bolt on my bike is actually too long, has two nuts and the Andoover part shows a hex head, not Allen socket head.
I'll pull it off and see if I have an alternative bolt handy (needs to be high tensile). Might just fix the issue.

Was thinking that as well. I checked MotoParts Inc. part image and it seems to show a spring identical to what I have...with hooks on opposite sides of each other, unlike the Andoover part image. Installing the correct spring with a 180 deg twist to fit it like my bike should be challenging....this bike was re-furbed by a Harley dealer in '90's, so who know what they were capable of?!? ;-)
 
I put in a standard hex head 7/16" bolt from hardware store just as test . I also attached spring into stand tab from the rear side as pics above indicate...spring still contacts bolt head but is easily able to slide over it during stand arm swing...no more bending radically around before releasing with a clatter.
I will order correct bolt which I understand had an even lower profile head than standard hex bolts. Regarding the bushing, there is wobble between arm and mount bracket at pivot, so I'd like to replace the bush...does that need a press into/out of the stand arm pivot? Mine seems really in tight....tricks to R&R it?

The bolt clamps the bush tightly to the bracket, the stand pivots freely around the bush, so the bush should be a loose sliding fit.

So to be clear, the Bush should fit into the arms pivot hole, not the bracket, correct? I can see what I think is the bush, lighter metallic ring in the arm hole. Seems fused to the hole. Bolt fits through and can rotate freely within that Bush opening.

Yes, the bracket may have some bend, but will see how it effects deployment after new bolt is installed. The arm bump stop comes to rest against frame rail and seems correct. Bike does have exaggerated lean on SS compared to my Bonneville but that's not a good measure.
 
OK, will order new bolt,washers, nut and bushing.
I'll be happy just to get it deploying smoothly for now. Any bracket bend issues can wait for another time.
 
Yes, but it isn't a high tensile bolt, the shank is a bit shorter than I think the mount needs, and it's not corrosion resistant. New, correct bolt is not $$$ and can ship with other things I'm getting.
 
One thing that I don't think has been made clear yet, and took me years to realise, is that there are TWO bushes available, called 'pivot spacers' by Andover Norton: this one fits the original side stand, and this one fits later, replacement side stands, going back at least 16 years, which are visibly different to the originals and look like this – notice how much more angular the later side stand is. The pivot spacer for the original side stand is too big for the hole in the later side stand, and the pivot spacer for the later side stand is, obviously, too small for the hole in the original side stand. That's what I found, anyway, and it would explain why AN offer two different pivot spacers. I just wish they could have made these items as original, and not mucked about with them. Anyway ... As L.A.B. indicated, when tightened the correct, tensile bolt, with the washer against its head, and the nut lock the pivot spacer in place, and the side stand pivots around what is effectively a fixed extension of the frame. HTH. I found this out the hard way, after an insurance repair by someone who had obviously got the wrong spacer and just hammered it in ...!

From that image, it appears I have the later SS and need the updated spacer. Is there a shot of the original SS somewhere just to compare?
