oil filler cap, WTF ?

I think the black one is his tool, that is used to unscrew the stock Norton filler cap.

The shiny stainless one is his replacement filler cap.
The description on Ollie's site says this is a complete replacement for the Norton part (not just the cap) and the length of the dipstick is the latest that Norton has. He also mentions that the Norton dipstick alone can not be used with his cap.

The polished stainless one is a replacement cap with dip stick.

The black plastic one is a tool for use on the standard cap.

Here’s the google translation of the black tool:

“Anyone who has ever tried to open the "dipstick" with their bare hands has more than cursed the system.

Since it is almost impossible to unscrew the oil dipstick without tools and scratches on a Norton 961, we have developed a tool to simplify this.

The tool is made of polyamide to prevent damage to the dipstick. When placing an order, care must be taken that Norton incorporates various designs of the dipstick. Therefore, it is essential to send a picture of your dipstick when ordering.”

Apologies if I was not clear. I was only referring to the stainless cap/dipstick combo and was trying to be of some assistance with translation.

Yes , the oil cooler is still mounted. Now if Ollie could mount the oil filter just in front of the rear tire below the swing arm pivot , we can come full circle !

There is a 4th picture on Ollie's site for the oil filter mount and it shows that the Norton Oil Cooler is still mounted.
Got it. Fourth picture high up on the frame. Thanks. He talks about oil cooling with the filter there. I thought it odd he would remove the cooler.

He is just saying that due to the filter itself now being in the air stream that overall oil cooling is somewhat improved. It certainly appears to be a well thought out and nicely made part......but in the end it is just one more thing hanging from the frame that detracts a bit from having a clean looking bike...IMHO.

Is this external oil filter intended to augment the filtering ability of the in-engine oil filter, or to replace it?
Is the in-engine filter a problem, or is the external spin on filter simply easier to source than the in-engine filter?

The description says this external filter is to be used in addition ( zusätzlich) to the internal one. That is a bit strange as he also mentions 2 reasons why the original one (location & installation) is not ideal. He also mentions that the external filter itself is of a type which is more readily available.

The original filter is not ideal, but if left in for service, still is going to deteriorate and need changing. Overkill.

So how do you buy one of oil filter caps from Thiel? I tried emailing but no response...

Hello to all,
In the moment I am in Ollie´s company to ask him why he don´t answer your e-mails.
He was shocked and together with him we checked the e-mails.
All e-mails are answered.
May be you must check your spam filter or make his domain save.
I have also checked if the domain is black listed without a negative result.
It is not necessary to tell you, what he is thinking about modern mediums like e-mails and so on, the keyboard have not so much "F´s"
Please send him mail to test the problem.
If it is not working we will find a solution.

Kind regards

Panetone

the one potential problem with an easy to open oil cap is vandalism: theft of the cap, or putting unwanted additives in. Is that the reasoning for the original design. Perhaps the Norton factory could let us know.

Ollie makes a nice special plastic (or nylon or something) socket that fits the stock cap. That’s what I’m having. That doesn’t help anyone open it apart from me. On the contrary really as I’ll have the confidence to tighten it fully.

How about a small hole drilled and wire it on? Depends how often you need to get in.....

I got my plastic oil filler cap tool from Ollie today.

BRILLIANT !

This should be a supplied as standard in the Norton tool kit. If there was one!

I highly recommend getting one of these from Ollie.

When I put the dipstick back in, I never have a problem reopening. When anyone else does it, time for leather and a pliers. Of course now it has a knick in it.
