I zinc my own nuts and bolts if I want the dull look I don't add zing brightener to one of my solutions. if you want shiny add the brightener. You can dip you nuts in a Chromate to change the color of your zinc Blue, yellow, black.....   to add extra protection. Cadmium is hard to come by these day because of the harsh  enviro dangers..  Talk to your plater on what you want your outcome to be and they should have the easiest safest way to achieve your desired finish.
