Yet another failed clutch basket

So my 2015 machine which has travelled a mere 5,000 kms, has suffered a clutch basket failure. Thanks to LRCKen, I have a fix at hand with a friend turning up some new, slightly larger "rivets" and spacers that will be held in place with nuts, as opposed to being peened over.

My question here is driven by lack of response from the new owners of Norton. I am aware Norton offered an improved clutch and wonder what they did and what parts make up the improved kit? Further, I wonder if it's worth persevering with Norton or if I should just get on and finish off my mine with the new rivet/bolts and hope for the best.

Thanks people.

Hello DBT , As far as I am aware you already have the later MK2 clutch . When they went from billet to cast baskets , was the major change. Clive's clutch on his 2017 looks just like mine and I have a Late 2014 build. Replace the cush drive springs with high quality replacements would be my suggestion . I would stick with the Norton , and lets hope for the best with the new TVS-Norton company .

Thanks Tony, I've still yet to hear from Norton so at the moment I'm kind of stuck having to use the fasteners we've come up with. I sent them a plea through Facebook messenger and received a brief reply providing me with the warranty email. So far all I'm hearing is crickets so It would appear the new TVS company is starting out like the old one.

Where is everyone getting Norton parts for the 961s? I used to use AF1 in Austin, TX but doesn't seem like they carry the brand anymore. Any ideas would be helpful. I'm in CA.

Email Norton , They have parts and are shipping them Carmen said ; parts@nortonmotorcycles.com
I have received a response from Norton and they do have the parts, however my motorcycle, and I suspect a good many of Access Norton members, is no longer covered by warranty. The replacement clutch basket is £684.00 plus another £65.00 postage.

Is there a warranty on the clutch supplied? And I would ask for pictures of the rivets before it is sent. Might make them inspect it rather than just pick and pack......

Yea. The guys at AF1 were good to deal with. A lot of stuff they had listed they would just order upon request. They never did have shelves full of Norton bits. Mostly the Aprilia things that fit on the Norton.
l'm pretty sure they are more or less done with Norton. Maybe with a little luck and new ownership they will be willing to jump back in.

I asked that Clive but so far have not heard back. I think I'll stick with the repairs detailed by Ken back in June and for which I now have the fasteners made up. I have increased the diameter by about 1mm and have used high-tensile bolts to manufacture the new fasteners so I'm hopeful it will hold up. At this stage I don't have anything to lose. If it doesn't work, and I haven't crashed, I'll have to purchase the new item.

Considering that as the basket itself is fine and you would be paying all that money effectively for a few rivets with no guarantee I agree with you - maybe putting a couple of hundred miles on then stripping to inspect it as it's easy enough to do. Fortunately my rivets ar not too badly formed and I have covered over 10000 miles which shows once they have been fixed properly all should be well.

What we need is a competent engineer like Ollie at Thiel to offer a rebuild service including ring gear pinning.

The warranty on replacement parts is 12 months Clive.

And would that cover the replacement of everything damaged when the springs/ rivets give way? When I tried to get my second failed starter replaced I was told that I had done something to break it so good luck there.......

Was the replacement fitted by you or a " competent motorcycle shop" ?

Norton replaced the first one under warranty at the factory so answer your question as you deem appropriate......
