Hi, new 850 Commando owner here, in need of Whitworth tools. Only want quality, no Chinese junk. Spanners, 3/8” sockets, tap and die are priorities right now. Thanks!

Thanks, so King Dick and Koken are good quality tools? I also see Rolson, Laser and Silverline. Any comments?

The majority of fasteners, threads, etc. on a Commando, (therefore tools, taps and dies required), however, are not "Whitworth".

Huh, that's probably a good thing. Are the majority then imperial (same as SAE)?

Thanks, LAB. These are looking better and better... I've got the small one. I did order some Koken sockets off of ePay.

Thanks for providing the needed sizes. I'd couldn't imagine needing a 10 wrench set.

Yes.

I don't know what jobs you are intending to do but you may also need the odd special tool, some of which can be made.

A clutch spring compressor tool (bought or made) is definitely required for stripping/assembling the clutch.

A cut-down key for carb/manifold removal is extremely useful (could be 5/32" 7/32" or 1/4" hex size).

Cool. I can see I will be spending a lot of time on this site if there are more kind folks like you.

I have Koken, King Dick, and Rolson in my toolbox. Koken and King Dick are top quality. Rolson is good enough. My Rolson wrenches don't get used much.

I also have quite a few German made British Standard/Whitworth tools. Watch eBay for Elora or Gedore brands. They're probably my favorites.

Thanks, I found some Britool and Bedford spinners (I think you have to call them that if they were made in the UK) on ePay. Did buy some Koken sockets. With a wacky name like KD I thought these might me a gimmick but I guess they are actually quite good, used in a lot of the tool kits. Didn’t know about the German brands, the only one I know of from that period is Heyco which are are pretty good too, maybe the German equivalent of KD.

LAB forwarded me here as I just asked a similar question. What other tools other than wrenches, spanners, sockets... Unified Tap/Die set sounds like. What is the favorite tool in the toolbox? I'm a fan of buying vintage tools but just can't see paying $15 for the tool and $15 for shipping (each).
