worn side stand lug

My sidestand lug has become worn to the point that it's allowing the stand much too far forward and the bike is quite leant over, probably from years of abuse with a worn bush. It's solid to the frame, not compromised in any way, if I pack a couple of washers in the gap when I open the stand the bike sits about right, the correct repair looks to be welding along the lug and reshaping back to spec but with the hassle of welding on the bike (fuel, carbs etc) I'm thinking it would be easier to take the stand off and weld the difference onto the stand, anybody had this trouble??
It's a 72 model.

Mine is a 71. Lug is there, stand is not.
I have read many issues of a failing stand. I would like to have one but I will stick with the center.

I don't have a centre stand, which is probably cause for the heavy wear, lug is solid on the frame. I think the 71 lug is different to the 72.

I (stick) welded up and reshaped the lug on my 73 - with the engine out.

Don't know the earlier lugs, but could be a bit tricky with the clutch housing a bit in the way,
so your packing with washers etc until you can have a proper go at it might be a better idea.
Don't do anything too irreversible to the sidestand though ?

The packing with washers at the point where the stand and the lug bear together was only to test the theory, they fall out when I open the stand again.
I'm really not willing to even take the tank off to weld the lug at the moment, I did think of drill and tapping the loading point on the lug with a small screw then grinding that back to size.

Yes it is possible to weld the stand up to make up the difference instead of welding the lug on the frame. I did the very same thing on my MK3, that and making a new close fitting pivot bush cured the excessive 'lean' when the bike was on its side stand. You will have a bit of trial and error getting the additional weld to the right shape but it is achievable.

I built up mine (MKIII) with a mig welder. I removed the stand, put a nut and bolt in its place and clamped the ground lead to it. One pass and a minute with a grinder and it was good as new. Oh, I believe I removed the battery leads just in case. No paint burn on the frame and the paint was already worn off the lug.

The stand was so far around it looked like it would collapse.
