Hi Folks,

I've just restarted a rebuild on my '71 750 that I commenced some, er, 25 years ago :-)

It has one of the original Lucas Rita AB5 units, with the finned case and a ballast resistor. I've sussed out (I think) most of the wiring but not how the resistor connects in. There is diagram for a Moto Guzzi unit with a resistor on the internet, but it has 6 wires and mine only has 5. I've also found a discussion on this forum, but it didn't seem to come to a clear opinion.

Does any one know the connections?

Thanks,
Adam

Wow, this is a dynamic forum - thanks for such quick replies!

I've already been through the Eurospares page and, excellent though it is, it doesn't have anything on the AB5 or resistor. I'll see if Dynodave posts a reply.

Thanks,
Adam

I printed everything I could get from both of those sites. I still do not see any diagrams of the ballast resistor and it's location in the wiring diagram of the AB5. I have the same problem and am waiting to get a response. I did call the British Cycle people to ask if I still ground the case on the AB5 if I am running a negative ground system. They said "yes." I still don't understand that but am taking their word for it. (I guess it "floats" any way and they just don't want it ungrounded.)
Dan.

I found the nessesary diagrams. They had been posted before by LAB but for other reasons. Here they are:

The first is the one for a Guzi with a negative ground system and the second is the way a Norton would have used the AB5 with a positive ground system.

Cheers, Dan.

Fantastic - thanks Dan, that's just what I was looking for!

I wonder if the instructions on http://www.britcycle.com/Manuals/LucasRitaNegative.htm for running the AB11 on -ve earth apply to this model? I'll give it a try and then post the results . . .

I've got the case open and there aren't any connections to it. I can only think that it needs grounding to either prevent static build up or, more likely, to provide screening.

Ciao,
Adam
