Who sells Copper sump filter washers? Or use the nylon?

Good evening Nortoneers, oh & a belated happy fathers day to those of you that not only made kids but actually fathered them. I'm trying to find some new Copper sump filter bolt washers. The last ones I got came as the nylon kind & since they came from Old Britts I'm sure they must be fine. I guess that's the only kind they sell now but as a creature of habit I'm looking for a place to buy the copper ones. I also saw after doing a search that some people use aluminum ones. Is one of the three types really better?? I just know I have used the copper kind with that compressable layer in the middle and not had them leak so I tend to want to stick with that. Thanks, Glenn.

Yes that is the part number I ordered but they may all use the same #. thanks, I'll check that place out.

You want to ask for 06-7680; at least as a genuine Andover Norton part it is the copper one.

My 850 parts manual has the 06-1543 # in it. Are you getting the # 06-7680 from a earlier 750 book? Did they change from copper to nylon with the 850? I think I will order some copper ones but since I have one I'm going to give the nylon one a try, it may work just as well. I tend to smear a very light amount of Permatex grey sealer on drain plug washers and I'm not sure how well it sticks to nylon but I think it will be ok. We shall see. Thanks.

Never used nylon ones, didn't even know they existed. Comes from my too brief involvement with Norton spares- only 30-odd years. Sorry.

The 72 & 73 750's don't have sump filters? Well that explains why I don't remember ever dealing with them before this 850. 72 was the "newest" Norton I had had before this bike.

Only the 1972 model went without the filter. 1973 reverted to the proven formula. 1972 engines (the "Combat" year) had the oil drainage system cleverly redesigned so it did not work above 4000rpm and threw all the oil out of the engine breather. These crankcases must be modified or the engine will die the "Combat" death. Unless you ride the poor beast like a Harley and don't rev it above 4. But what's the fun in that?

Yes, I admit the 1973 parts list give this information. However, I suspect it is wrong. I have a late (1973) 750 crankcase which has the filter. Just built an engine using it. I think the factory wasn't too bothered with the 750 parts list at the time, the 750 engines running out that year. The plan was to replace them with the 850 or, alternatively, to offer the 750 shortstroke engine of which a batch was built but not sold.

I think you willl find the '73 750 cases wouldn't normally have the sump strainer.

I take your word for it. The '73 engine I have with the filter is actually a genuine short-stroke. They might have used 850 crankcases on those even though the (original) number is a 750 number.

Yes, 750 short stroke cases would be expected to have the sump filter-because the 750 "short stroke" engines were supposed to have been 850 units with a short 80.4mm stroke (instead of the 850's standard 89mm stroke) so 750 homologated production race engines could be built cheaply by using readily available 850 engine components.

Hey guy's I goofed. I started this thread thinking that after ordering a sump filter washer using part # 065143 I ended up with a nylon washer. (from Old Britts). In truth I DID get the copper one I wanted but I just realized that when the parts got to me months ago, I had put some "spare" parts in the bag with the new stuff. By mistake I pulled out a old nylon washer thinking it was the new part # 065143. I just realized my mistake when I went into the bag o parts to get some other stuff and saw the Copper crush washer sitting there saying " Hey Dumb {¥€<|t Iv'e been here all this time waiting for you to pull your head out of your ass & find me!" ok. Now for the safety wire, I know I put it here somewhere!!
