It seems an always interesting debate in the Norton circles is what each owners
favorite Model/Configuration is...

Mine is a Yellow 1971/72 Norton 750cc Commando Highrider...and one I'm still looking for.

What is your favorite?

Hands down cream of the crop to me is a hounddog's rooting tooting '72 Interstate long range cargo cruising scrambler in proper black patent leather and gold trim.

Gidday All.

To me the Fastback . the original and the best looking Commando..

notice all the other makes that fitted a rear tailpiece. Harley, the white one, kawasaki Z900, BMW R 900S.

Fell in love with them when I was 14 years old. bought one in 1976. Still got it.

Although a lot of people dont like the Fastback. Reckon its ugly. Oh well each to their own.

the best looking fastbacks were 1970 model. all the cool old stuff and those good looking peashooters. the Atlas type mufflers were a bit chunky for me..

And the best mod for me, fitting an 850 engine.
fastbacks forever Aussie bradley

That's easy. It's what ever is sitting in your garage. Second is the one thats out being ridden.

Cool bikes for sure. I just wish they used the smaller side covers or atleast painted them to match the tank. They look fast in the back but not in the middle.

I can't give you a hardtime about a Fastback...seems I'm an Outcast liking HiRiders the most.
Especially Yellow ones! :D

Gidday Mike. You are in good company then mate.

A question please, did they make an 850 HI Rider that was yellow and looked just like yours. My mate bought one. It was in 1977 and I remember it well, but i thought it was an 850. it was 3 or 4 years old when he got it.
If it was an 850 must have had disc brake. Cant remember. But very close to yours. it was not new. My memory struggles sometimes.

But a very pretty motorcycle. It would be my second choice model for sure.

Again, the "S", "SS" Interstate were always a bit more popular than the HI-Rider.
But then again, I do share hobot's predelection for Commando choppers too.

Hey Snorton. The oil tank seems to be exactly what puts people off Mate. A lot of people have told me just that. Bloody huge ugly oil tank. And matching left side cover too. But all is fine. a very apt comment indeed.

This has the makings of a damn fine thread. best wishes Aussie bradley

This is what I found Brad on the colors...73 750's did have yellow...and as much as
I love 850's...I love the front drum on the 72. (Not that these combos couldn't all be pieced together)

Just a cool bike and they fit me well...now I'm going on the hunt I suppose...

gidday Snorton. that your bike Mate? , a truly tasty one indeed.
A question please. how do you keep them looking like that. You must have some good clean roads where you live. mine was no concourse but reasonably tidy. a very short spell on Queensland roads soon fixed that. Stone chips, scratches, road grime, tar, after 250 miles. Awful
So I take me hat off to you people who can keep them looking like that. it must take a lot of work. best wishes Aussie bradley

gidday Mike. I have a drum brake. I too like it and have never had any trouble. Yes, I know, I go too slow. But do cruise at 65 MPH highway stuff. I have had some fade sometimes but it takes a steep range to induce fade. and they suit the bike well. I can imagine discs being better but dont know.
My mates bike may indeed been a 73 750 with a disc brake. it definitly was Yellow. thanks for that. Aussie bradley

Not my bike, just an Internet pic. I thought it was a decent example of a stock looking restored '73 or '74 Roadster.

I think all Commandos look great and the beauty is that you can make any one you want. Nothing else has the symmetrical styling of upswept pipes, inclined motor etc etc. I think they are a work of art. But for me it is my 71 Fastback Long Range. I know the tank is old and off an Atlas and they were popular in Aussie, but it gives the bike a bit more bulk (and range) than the standard. Like my northern Aussie mate I too fell in love with them when I was about 15 and my brother had just bought a new Fastback. I can still remember it's smell and the way it glistened and crackled as it cooled down in the garage when he first brought it home.

Let's remind ourselves of the original question: What is your favorite stock Norton Model/Configuration?

I tend to agree with Mick Duckworth, author of books on the Commando and the Dominator: the Norton 650SS.

Stephen Hill

I love in order to preference:
-1968/69/70 Fastback;
-1969 S;
-1970 Roadster;
-1970 LR;
-1970 SS;
-1971 850 Dunstall;
-1972 Roadster;
-1972 Interstate,
and my special 68/75 Fastback all Black!
Piero

Big call I like them all so I suppose in order I would go with a s model with purple fireflake a 68 fastback nice domed primary a ss orange & black bike a mk 3 roadster and throw in that yellow highrider , chuck in a silver interstate Thanks John

I've always preferred the looks of the Interstate, I've had a '73 Interstate 850 since around 1975 so I suppose i'm a bit biased!

I like this one very much. Also the Interstate and a cool pic of a racebike I put in here also.
