Country flag
Have looked for the weight of the engine/transmission and haven't found it. What does it weigh? Do I need another bloke to help me lift it out of the frame ?

If you have the wheels and forks removed, lay it on its side on a blanket, rug, etc. and remove the frame from the cradle. Frame only weighs 26 lbs.

If you are pulling the engine/trans together, then get some help. Or you could pull the engine without the cradle, then pull the transmission from the cradle. Of course that means disassembling the primary first.

My usual single handed way is remove all but crank case attached to cradle then lift it up and to LH side using cradle as handy handle to control aim. Maybe 35 lb with bottom end inside. like this was too to replace as only two bolts to zip in.

I've seen that figure quoted somewhere before, I THINK it's in the 135# neighborhood. Probably more with carbs & e-starter installed.

Yeah cradle and complete gearbox and engine weigh about as much as a young woman carried across a threshold. About 35 lb more if primary case still completely attached.

130 seems like a safe bet to me. Just shipped a '70 motor (no transmission or primary) and it weighed 92.5lbs.

I guess I can rig a comealong to the ceiling and get it to my worktable that way.

Typically, you are "only" lifting about 85# of power unit (no primary, no transmission, no carbs). The Commando engine can't remain in "one piece" and be removed from the chassis.

But...that's how they were fitted.

So from that last picture, I take it the proper way to place or remove the engine from the frame is on its side?

Before you get too excite look at the tool he's using to get the engine to fit!

He appears to be using a copper/hide mallet to drive in the rear Iso spindle, why, what would you use?

No Englishman's workshop toolkit would be complete without a "Thor".

That was, of course, a sad excuse for humor on my part.

Besides, my hammer is bigger than that.

Great pictures Les.

I particularly like the classic "comb over" in picture No.9

My 'Thor' is 3 lb steel sledge. Heavy Hammers should only be needed to 'nudge' stuff to align so only a tiny silver hammer or light thumb tack leather mallet needed to drive bolts home.

My scale broke or I'd of weighted the major components each for comparisons with Peel mods. I do power until service and removal via a rather sky hook and lower down on boxes etc till stable no tip over risk no under bike mechanisms or tables.
