After 12 years in "lay up" just started to fiddle around with the bike again. No spark on the spark plugs. Changed the coils but still no spark
I seem to remember the previous owner said he had changed to a Boyer electronic ignition but I'm a bit confused. The bike has no "black box" installed and only a single magnet inside the timing cover. Any suggestions ?
 
Take photos so we can see what you have in the ignition system

Go online and find the Boyer installation instruction and check the wiring.

Was this bike running before layup?

If there is no "black box" it sounds like half your ignition system has been removed.

The bike was running with frequent loss of spark on the spark plugs. Looking inside the timing cover I see only one magnet/pick up.
It is definately not the Boyer Bransden ignition. As far as I can see the coils are not connected in series
 
There's more than one type of Boyer Bransden ignition however this is the most common type.
What am I looking at?

Is the magnet the static or the moving part?

I realized what I was looking at when I saw the drawing you sent me. Thanks a lot. I will do some more testing to see where the problem can be. How does the lucas rita box look ??

The one on the right in this pic, the other is a replacement made for a time.

Grant Tiller | Norton Commando Wiring Diagram + Lucas RITA AB11

A popular upgrade in the late 70s and early 80s is the Lucas RITA electronic ignition system. Easily spotted on the Norton Commando, the Lucas RITA needed a larger points cover to house the large "reluctor" plate. You can find a copy of the original Lucas RITA AB11 fitting instructions here...

Thanks to everybody. Case solved ! What I have is the earlier Lucas Rita with the earlier style box. Time to do some fault finding. Will be interesting to find out what the problem is!!
 
Try seeing if the plugs spark when you click the ignition on and off
If it does,then take a look at pickup wires
If it doesn't then do all the usual checks,power and earth's etc
Also make sure the battery has at least 12 volts
 
The power transistors on the Lucas Rita are known for burning out - it’s worth getting it fixed though, as this is a superb ignition system!

They are much like the MK3 Boyer in that they like a nice strong 12 volts from the battery!
 
FWIW
In the USA I have repaired the boxes. But as the rita is quite good the # needing repair is low.

I bought out Micheal Moore when the AB11 went out of production and still have over 55 systems...but no commando ones for sale.

What am I looking at?

I can spin test AAU/mechanical points, Rita, Boyer(as seen above), for twins and triples and test coils :)
I did a sparx once a long time ago.
I could probably do the trisparks and pazon too
