I was over at a friend's house last week to pick up some FREE Cerwin-Vega PD-9 speakers (surround sound beasts)...

What a deal!

As good a deal as that was, THAT wasn't the good deal.

I noticed he had a cool looking DOHC thumper engine sat on a box in the midst of a pile of parts all over the place, and we got to talking. He had been riding his old '98 KLR 650 and 4 blocks from home, it made a "clunk-rattle-rattle-rattle..." sound the rest of the way home, with a trail of oil dribbles. So, he took the engine out of the chassis (which involves taking a lot of other stuff off), then decided to tear it completely apart and try to sell it off in parts. He got zero bites and $250 for the whole lot!

So, I told him I'd take it.

What a deal!

24 shop hours later, IT RUNS!

What a deal!

(nice tank, huh?)

Turns out it was only a misplaced hardened washer that got caught by the balancer weight, causing a small crack below the left side case...

What a deal!

Patched with JB Weld and it works just fine, not even a weep.

What a deal!

What a deal!

Still needs a new petcock (already ordered on ebay), and a few other odds and ends, but I'll be all in for under $500 with clean title!

This bike is 100% more NORTON than Mike Seate's bike is a "Triton"!

That's easily a $2500 machine. Now you'll have $2K more to spend on the Nortons!

I think I'd still get that case tig-welded.
